Denmark has banned the savoury spread Marmite, saying its added vitamins and minerals break food safety laws.

The Danish authorities must give their permission for products with such additives to be sold.

In recent years years they have banned several well-known items - including the chocolate malt drink Ovaltine and some breakfast cereals.

Already a shop in Copenhagen has been ordered to remove jars of Marmite from its shelves.

BBC Europe correspondent Chris Morris says outraged expats in the country are already threatening a campaign of civil disobedience and there are suggestions that the Danish ban could break European law.

What did Marmite ever do wrong? Spread on a slice of toast with some lurpak butter and it'll make a perfect breakfast every day of the year!

You can love it, you can hate it, but as far as I'm concerned, I hope the Danes revolt!

Just finished a bagel with Marmite thickly spread on it - delicious.

Always thought that there was something wrong with the Danes probably why I have always refused to buy their bacon.

Bloody killjoys, another country has banned one of my favourite foods following the USA.

Hope the Danes revolt against this attack of human rights.

Toast your bagel, spread Marmite on one half and peanut butter on the other. Squish it together. You will LOVE it (unless you are allergic to nuts...)!

I must be unusual. I had Marmite and didn't hate it or love it! I just found it OK!

Afraid I do not like peanut butter but have been known to put butter, marmite, chunk of extra strong cheddar cheese and a banana in a bagel - find it goes down a treat although the banana keeps sliding out.

Nice one Denmark, hopefully that's the first domino to fall towards the eventual demise of Marmite. It can be reclassified as what it is, axle grease and surplus stocks sold to industry.

British bacon and Danish bacon aren't really like-for-like though.

Personally I hate marmite, there is no need for it when there are so many other nice toast condiments like peanut butter, jam and chocolate spread.

Personally I don't think you can beat a Marmite and cheese sandwich. A nice spread of marmite with nice thick cuts of some nice English Mature Cheddar. Lovely! (Has to be thick white bread too!)

Marmite is allowed after all! Fantastic! :D

I'll call up Thomson and refund my plane ticket to Denmark, along with all my riot gear! ;)
