This tour ran on 28th November 1981 from Finsbury Park to Exeter St.Davids via the Berks & Hants, returning via the former Southern route via Yeovil Jn. 55016 worked throughout. Departing Exeter St.Davids the train must have been assisted up to Exeter Central. I have no record for the day of any such assistance and neither has the Six Bells Junction website. Given how long ago this tour ran I realise that this is a long shot, to say the least, but is any member of RailUK forums able to advise, please??

I don’t think it was assisted up the bank from St David’s but I’m more than happy to be put right if it was? I believe it was pathed into platform 3 (which was the up Waterloo platform in those days). My dad took me to see it and we watched it coming into St David’s across Red Cow Crossing - A pretty memorable moment for a young lad!

It must have been hammering away like mad with a massive V plume being fired out!

And a rather superb photo of No16 in P3 at Exeter SD

Credit to Patric Roft for that photo.
A lovely period piece that photo - a Deltic, Mk1 DMU, a Peak (with steam heated stock) all neatly lined up and rounded off with a full array of lower-quadrant semaphores!

Here’s a Western not making such a fuss!
Is that Western only running on one engine?

There appears to be only one exhaust plume (or one engine is particularly smoky and the other particularly clean).

Definitely a rather nice setting for such an unusual interloper…

Pretty certain it was on two engines at that sort of speed.

I was on the train. No assistance up the bank to Exeter Central.

S Yorks, usually
Why would one expect assistance? Class 33s with broadly half the power of a Deltic (and two thirds of the powered axles) routinely worked 8-coach Waterloo trains up the bank unassisted.

Definitely on both.
OK, I'll settle for one clean and one smoky engine then :D (my regular rides behind them between New Street and Solihull as a teenager are too long ago to remember their typical level of smokiness)

My thoughts too.

Quotation from https://www.delticsounds.com/deltichistory.html (my bold):

ETH

Electric Train Heating (ETH) for new coaching stock had to be supplied by the loco. Other diesel locos had their auxiliary generators replaced with new versions to take on the additional task, but there were technical reasons why Deltics could not follow suit. There was no room for a generator set, unless the steam heat boiler could be dispensed with, but steam-heat sleeping cars were to remain in service for some years. You could not simply wire up the heating to the main generators, since these produced varying voltages as the engines rev.

This coincided with a programme of rewiring the Deltic fleet, and the design engineers came up with an ingenious solution. ETH supply would come off both main generators (these generators are in series) when the engines are idling, but with the generator fields at full excitation . Also the idling speed of the engines would be increased from 650 to 700rpm. When the driver applies power, the ETH would switch over to the main generator nearest the driver, and the controls were altered so that the leading engine would rev up first. Thus, the voltage to the ETH would pick up quickly. Once the driver needed full power, the final travel of the power-handle would cause the trailing engine to rev up quickly.

Shortly afterwards, mark 2D air-conditioned coaches appeared. The ETH from the loco supplied motor-alternator sets on each coach, and this introduced more teething troubles to challenge the engineers. Mark 2E coaches were banned from working with Deltics.
That control change also helped to reduce wheelslip problems at low speeds.

46009 on 1V67. Later of course to have a terminal episode with a nuclear flask.

Someone actually shot a video of the tour departing Exeter St David's:

You can see from the single exhaust plume how only one engine is providing traction at this point.

Thanks for posting it. Technically they shot a film at the time ('8mm cine film' is mentioned) ;)

Yes, at around 1:55 you can see a major plume on the right and a minor one on the left.

Up the creek
Curiously, although I was working on the main line north of Exeter, and so would have access to the notices, and lived within earshot of Central, I have absolutely no recollection of this. Even if I had been on nights I would probably have gone along and had a look.

I travelled behind 55016 on a number of occasions in December 1981, and by then it was running on only one engine. BR had stopped replacing failed power units on Deltics by that time, so maybe 55016 had only one working engine on 28/11/81. What has not been mentioned is that 55016 was a last minute substitute for the booked loco 55002, which had been declared a failure!

The video I linked to shows two exhaust plumes though.

It's perhaps worth mentioning that 55016 has climbed the bank at Exeter on another occasion, more recently. It worked the Cathedrals Express from Exeter to Yeovil on July 6th 2003. Mind you, that is now over 20 years ago!

I was also on this railtour in the coach behind the loco. 55016 was definitely on 2 engines and was not assisted "up the bank". It later suffered an engine exhaust fire at Peterborough during December 1981 which presumably wasn't repaired due to its impending withdrawal.
