I bought an advanced ticket from the TransPennine website and selected to pick up the ticket at a ticket machine. Now I'm thinking that I'd like to change to an earlier train. I went through the process of amending the ticket on their website, and it went fine until I got to the delivery options. The only option was delivery by special delivery for £7.50. This is problematic because I don't live in the UK and have nowhere for the ticket to be delivered to, so I'd rather just pick it up at the station on the day of travel. Is there a way to get TransPennine to let me change the ticket and still pick it up at the station?

Transpennine deal with changes to Advance tickets by issuing an excess fare Unfortunately excess fares cannot be collected from a ticket machine, they can only be posted out. This normally means you have to give 7-days notice for them to be sent out normal post or pay for SPecial Delivery if it is closer than this to the date of travel.

An Advance ticket can be excessed to a flexible walk-up ticket on the day of travel by paying the difference in price but you must do this before the departure time of your Advance ticket.

I thought transpennine moved to refund and replace. You buy your new ticket, with exactly the same departing and arriving station, then they refund the old one after? Unless they’ve done another u-turn.

It appears to depend on whether it's a paper ticket or e-ticket:

Tickets bought on tpexpress.co.uk or the TransPennine Express mobile app
If you want to change a paper ticket, log into your account, select your booking, view details and amend your journey. If your journey is more than five days away, we'll send your new tickets to you - postal fees apply. If it's within five days, you'll need to visit a staffed ticket office to amend your paper tickets. Alternatively, contact our support team at 0345 600 1671 or email tpe.websupport@tpexpress.co.uk for help.

To change an eTicket, you will need to purchase a new ticket and submit a refund claim for the original. This new ticket will need to be for the same route and have the same origin and destination stations. It will also need to be purchased before the departure date and time of the original booking.

Please select ‘Change of Journey – new journey booked’ as the reason when submitting your refund claim and also provide your new Booking Reference number.

Thanks - I'm beginning to wonder if this is just too much hassle to arrive somewhere two hours earlier. But I'll explore one more avenue. I'm arriving in the UK on Monday and this is for a trip the weekend after; if I printed the ticket on Monday at another station, could the ticket office there change it, and perhaps access any cheap tickets that are still available instead of the more expensive flexible tickets available on the day of? Any extra fees or other disadvantages for doing that vs. the special delivery thing on the TransPennine website?

A competent ticket office should be able to change the ticket for you. It will cost the difference in fares (if any) plus a £10 admin fee per ticket.

What journey are you making as we might be able to suggest some alternatives.

Windermere to Glasgow Central on 9/9. Currently booked on the 11:47 train, changing in Oxenholme and arriving in Glasgow at 14:39. I would love to arrive in Glasgow a little bit earlier if possible and not very expensive.

For future reference, Windermere to Glasgow Central (one way) is possible, reasonably cheaply - and flexibly - on a walk up Kendal to Glasgow Central route "via Carlisle" off peak single costing £27.50. Any train at or after 0900 or all day if a Saturday/Sunday/Bank Holiday. Just need an additional connecting ticket from Windermere to Kendal costing either £6.40 or £6.90.

P.S. The above split can be done slightly cheaper if the connecting train from Windermere to Oxenholme calls en route at Burneside (not all do) as well as at Kendal.
