Delays between Wakefield and Leeds (11/07)

National Rail are reporting delays to service between Wakefield and Leeds. No reason given but sources that I know are stating that a teenager has climbed on a freight train and got electrocuted near Outwood.

BTP confirmed that a 15 year old male has died following coming into contact with OHLE at Wrenthorpe Sidings, sourced Sky News Desk Twitter. Sad story, perhaps an adventure gone wrong, we'll never know I guess, some will say they should have known better, all the same, but a life taken way too soon. Rest in peace.

The 15 year old boy climbed on top and touched the wires and died at the scene, 16 year old boy and 18 year old girl taken to pinderfields after falling from the waggon, it happened on the last 2 waggons facing Leeds

A 15-year-old has died after climbing on to a freight train and coming into contact with an overhead cable in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
The boy was treated by paramedics, but died at the scene, British Transport Police (BTP) said.

Two other teenagers - a 16-year-old male and 18-year-old female - were also injured in the incident at Wrenthorpe Sidings around 6.40pm.
Their injuries were not thought to be life threatening. They were being treated at Pinderfields Hospital.

Describing the circumstances of the incident, a BTP spokesman said: "At this stage it would appear that the two boys and the female were on the railway line and the 15-year-old boy had climbed on to a freight train at the location."

It was mentioned on the ITV national news last night, looking at Sky's photo Wakefield seems to have moved to Southern region, obviously its very sad that a teenager has died but what an incredibly stupid thing to do.

Hopefully this should encourage people to realise just how dangerous the railway is nowadays. While it is an incredible shame that lessons such as this are taught with fatal consequences, it should mean that less tomfoolery should occur.

While I'd argue that a 15 year old should know better, if he was with a 16 and 18 year old then it beggars belief. Didn't they learn about the dangers of electricity at all in that time?

I'm sure everyone has done silly things in their youth, but come on!

If none of then genuinely knew any of the risks, their schooling and parenting must have been pretty poor. Or was some sort of substance abuse likely to have played a part?

If parents and schools were doing their jobs properly I'd have thought that people would know that high-voltage electricity is pretty nasty stuff, best avoided by quite a wide margin, well before the age of 15.

Of course they'll know it's dangerous![*] That's the attraction... 15-year-old boys think they are immortal.


* And it's a parent's job, not the school's, to teach them a) not to trespass and b) that electricity cables are dangerous.

The lad involved has now been named, and it's been said he was actually 16, not 15 as widely reported last night. Not that it makes much difference - still both stupid and tragic.

I remember when I was at school someone from BTP coming to school and showing us the dangers about playing on railway lines.

Does this still take place or is it something that has gone with cuts to the police?

It has made the news headlines on TV round West Yorkshire tonight. I haven't seen the article but my parents have and by all accounts it seems again we are in a situation where it is the railways fault, which my parents questioned on the lines of 'what can the railways do if people jump over fences and start playing on freight wagons (when they should know better)?' Indeed not a right lot, realistically!

It will be if gates were found to be left open or unlocked, or if the boundary fence is found to be damaged or missing.

Unfortunately, regardless of the complete stupidity of these people, the Railway will cop for it!

Of course, if the gates were locked and fences were in good nick, then there's nothing to worry about.
