I tried to travel from Durham to Norwich this afternoon using advance split tickets, one with LNER from Durham to Peterborough and one with EMR from Peterborough to Norwich. The connection time at Peterborough was 50 minutes.

Due to the ECML disruption today I was unable to board my booked LNER train at Durham, or any of the 3 trains after it. All the trains were standing room only on arrival at Durham. LNER staff at Durham told me my ticket to Peterborough could be used any time tomorrow, and the booking office made me a new seat reservation for the morning.

LNER staff however, refused to confirm that my EMR ticket would be valid for travel tomorrow, and were unable to provide any endorsement to that effect. After reading many threads here about over zealous guards I’m anxious about trying to use my advance ticket on the second leg of my journey. I don’t want to receive a penalty fare or be prosecuted. If it is a busy as today I doubt I would be able to find a guard prior to boarding at Peterborough. Even if I did find the guard, if they were not happy to accept my ticket I would have to leave the station, purchase a new one, and then wait an hour for the next service.

I understand that LNER are responsible for getting me to my destination, regardless of whether the tickets are split or not. If I purchase a new Peterborough to Norwich ticket tomorrow will they reimburse this cost also? Or should I just attempt to travel with todays advance ticket tomorrow and hope for the best?

EMR are compelled to allow you to travel; if questioned simply explain the situation. If they attempt to charge, you can refuse to pay any extra. To be fair, my understanding is that EMR Guards on this route are generally very reasonable, so I would be surprised if you experienced a problem.

Don't buy any additional tickets.

Was it impossible to board even at the very front of the train?

That’s great thank you!

It was, the platform staff took a group of the longest waiters down to the front for the second to last train to try and squeeze us on but there was just no way. Lots of doors were filled floor to ceiling with stacked suitcases. I’ve never experienced chaos like it in all my years of travelling on the railway.

Blimey. It's very poor form of LNER not to be endorsing tickets; however the lack of endorsement does not in any way reduce your rights.

Unfortunately your experience of being unable to obtain endorsement happens is not unique; some employees within the rail industry really do themselves and the entire industry a disservice at times. I can't see that ever changing.
