I recently made a return journey with both legs delayed by more than 2 hours. I received a 100% refund in voucher form. Happy days.

However I found myself stood at a London Midland station the other day and there was a delay repay poster. At the bottom, it said:

'Remember, delay repay is based on single journeys, so if you were delayed on your outward and return journey you can claim twice'.

This seems somewhat odd. Whats the situation here? Can you really claim twice? Surely not as that would be 200% of the value of your journey in vouchers?

For example, if your outward journey is delayed by an hour (on a return ticket) you'll get a 50% refund of your ticket in voucher form. If you are then delayed on the return portion by 45 mins (for example) you'll get a further 25% refund in voucher form. Delay repay sees outward and return journeys as separate things, you don't have to submit your claim for your outward journey at the same time as your return journey, if you are unfortunate enough to be suitably delayed on both portions.

100% of your ticket in vouchers, and if the clerk is feeling generous, a good will gesture to keep you on their side.

The way I read Delay Repay is that if you are delayed by over 2 hours on your outward journey and also by over 2 hours on your return journey then you are entitled to 2 x 100% of the Return journey.

Note that the above applies specifically to the Delay Repay scheme, not all TOCs operate Delay Repay.

So technically I've been paid only 50% of the vouchers I am entitled to under Delay Repay (Yes, it's actual Delay Repay - XC infact)?

The XC passenger charter says:

If either or both the outward or return legs of your journey is delayed by more than two hours and you have a return ticket, you will be entitled to receive up to 100% of the cost of the return ticket.

It seems to say that if BOTH leys are delayed, you will receive 'up to 100%' of the cost of the return ticket.

This wording seems quite different to that on the London Midland poster that first piqued my interest in this.

Different TOCs use different wording and LM even mix the wording on their website.

In my view, if you are being 'refunded' the max you can get is the total amount you paid, but if you are being 'compensated' the amount could be more than the total you paid.

This is how I saw it, too. But they specifically mention you can claim TWICE, which seems odd.

Would you not have to complete two separate Delay Repay forms, one for each leg? In order to get double the amount back.

I usually write a letter rather than fill out a form.
