Hi all, I haven't been at all lucky with GWR this week and am having to submit 2 claims:
Journey 1 (15:00 Penzance to Paddington on 02nd July) Train held at Plymouth due to signal failure between Exeter and Tiverton and eventually cancelled after about 1 hour.

Do I leave the claim at that? Or do I include the fact that we were advised to join a later train on the opposite platform that was already packed to continue our Journey some how.

Ended up having to stand from Plymouth to Reading, which the train finally managed to get to, then had to transfer to another Paddington service eventually arriving at 23:34 instead of 20:33!
To be fair, GWR did eventually get me to my destination, but I would describe it as my worst journey ever...ended up standing in the vestibule area in First Class as there was nowhere else. (No seriously there wasn't) The only saving grace was that the TM left us with access to the trolley and advised us to help ourselves, and actually people were very restrained, until the Trolley member of Staff joined at Tiverton or was it To the? and proceeded to lock himself and the trolley away in the Staff area and that was the last we saw of him and the trolley until Reading. Will the fact that I had to stand in the sweltering heat and got in so late affect any 'compensation' or will they just argue that I shouldn't have continued my Journey? I work in a Hospital, so that was not an option

Journey 2
Paddington to Exeter St.Davids 20:35 Thursday 06th July
Signal failure outside Paddington most trains from 17:00 onwards cancelled with an estimation of no fix until at least 22:00. Website and Twitter advice was not to travel, so I didn't even attempt to make that journey after the horrors of the previous Sunday. If this is not in the right place then I apologise, I also realise that there is currently a long wait for any Delay repay or whatever GWR call it.

For Delay Repay compensation it's the overall delay to your journey that counts. You suffered an overall delay to your journey of 3 hours 1 minute on Sunday 2nd July so you should get back the full cost of your ticket.

Your journey on Thursday 6th July was abandoned (or your suffered a delay of over 2 hours if you eventually made it the next day) so again you are entitled to claim for the full cost of your ticket.

It is frustrating when delays occur, I was caught up in the delays on Sunday and suffered an overall delay of 4 hours and had to take two rail replacement taxi services. The arrangements for getting a taxi from Paddington was particularly farcical. You could always write in to customer services explaining the difficulties you encountered and they might give you some free tickets.

This week hasn't been good for transport. On Wednesday I suffered a 3 hour delay to a journey I was making due to a road collision near junction 14 if the M1. Didn't move a single inch for over 2 and a half hours! It was one of the hottest days of the year, there were no refreshments in my car and I suffered in the extreme heat. I wonder what Highways England will say if I write in to them asking for compensation for the delay to my journey.

GWR do not offer Delay Repay but they do offer delay compensation under the inferior charter system. The important information is the scheduled vs actual times of your journey and to keep the claim concise.

Use the form at the bottom of this page, uploading a photo of your ticket(s) https://www.gwr.com/help-and-support/refunds-and-compensation/delay-compensation

You are due 100% compensation from GWR or a delay of that extent

As you took their advice not to travel, you are entitled to a 100% refund from the retailer.

Thanks for the replies, I probably should have stated that both tickets were purchased through Crosscountry to take advantage of their more reasonable amendment policy.

So if I am reading correctly Journey 1 claim needs to go to GWR, but the claim for the abandoned journey needs to go to Crosscountry (the retailer)?

I agree, Taxi"s at Paddington was a joke, I nearly didn't"t bother as I couldn't find a member of GWR Staff, but a Network Rail chap told me that they all "hide" by the excess fares window,, and sure enough that's where they were.

If the delay was on the M6 Toll motorway, would you have have a claim?:o
