Delay repay when I abandoned a journey

Yesterday (14th of March) I planned to make a return trip from Lancaster to Windermere:
D Lancaster 2055
A Oxenholme 2110
D Oxenholme 2115
A Windermere 2132

And then return directly from Windermere on the 2245 arriving back into Lancaster at 2322, which would be the last train.

However, the initial Virgin train from Lancaster to Oxenholme ran late and I missed the connection at Windermere, the next train from Oxenholme to Windermere wouldn't have arrived until 2237, giving me 8 minuets there before having to head home, and negating the point of my trip. I therefore instead went straight back from Oxeholme to Lancaster and never arrived Windermere. I had an Off Peak Day return with a 16-25 railcard which I bought at 2102, I purposely waited at I knew if I wasn't going to make the connection there would be no point in travelling, but asked a member of staff who advised it would "probably" be fine.

Is there anyway I can claim relay repay for the journey, I never went to Windermere so don't relay know what to put in the form online, had I waited for the next train I would have been 1 hour and 5 min late, will the check if I just put that on the form? And am I even entitled to any compensation at all.

Or if it helps matters, nethern guard on the Virgin services marked the ticket, so can I claim a refund instead? Or is it considered that I have used the tickets?

Thanks

Surely its an abandoned journey, returned to origin, as you couldn't get to your destination?

If, as a result of delay or cancellation, you were returned to your origin instead of completing your journey, I think under the new NRCoT that entitles you to a refund. I don't have the new document to check right now, perhaps someone can link to it.

Other posters are correct. Return to the place of purchase for a full refund. This applies even if you started your journey and later returned to your point of origin.

Thanks again for your help everyone, I've now heard back from Virgin, they have said that I would need to go to Lancaster (where I bought them) and show them the tickets to be issued with a refund. Or apparently any other UK train station can forward the to Lancaster. Unfortunately, as a student just beginning my easter brake I left the tickets at my room in Lancaster University. And won't go back till around the end of April. I've asked if anything can be done about this (or if they will accept a photo of the tickets and receipt which I do have) but im not especially hopeful.
