Delay repay - what can I claim for in this mess…

Booked an advanced return ticket from stations fareham to reading, changing at Winchester.

Due to personal reasons I ended up having to depart from, Swanwick, changing at St Denys, to pick up the booked connection train at Winchester. (Normal ticket bought online.)

The train from St Denys to Winchester was cancelled, causing me to miss the original booked train from Winchester to Reading.

Ended up having to go a totally different route to get to destination, and forking out for an expensive on the day single ticket.

Can I claim any delay repay for missing Winchester to Reading and having to purchase a ticket for a separate route.

Couldn’t wait for delayed trains to catch up due to attendance required at business meeting

Was your original outward advance a through ticket from Fareham to Reading or did you buy split tickets?

What route did you take from St Denys? It would be very odd to avoid Winchester.

I think the OP held a through Advance from Fareham to Reading, a walk-up ticket from Smethwick to Winchester, and a walk-up ticket from St Denys to Reading.

The itinerary on the through Advance ticket included a change at Winchester, so they bought the walk-up ticket from Smethwick with the intention of arriving at Winchester in time to resume their original itinerary. Once they saw that the train from St Denys to Winchester was cancelled, they bought a fresh walk-up ticket from St Denys to Reading and travelled via Southhampton.

Because the Advance doesn't permit starting/ending short, I'd suggest no Delay Repay is due with regard to it, and an abandoned journey refund isn't either because they didn't return to origin.

I don't know about the two walk-ups.

So your intentions changed, but when you started your journey your intention was to go from Swanwick to Reading with split tickets Swanwick to Winchester and Fareham to Reading, starting short on the second ticket at Winchester, correct?

The difficulty is, starting short on an Advance is not permitted, so even if your intended journey from Swanwick connected validly with your booked train at Winchester, SWR could argue delay repay isn't due because the tickets you held were not valid for your intended journey.

I would say, in order to preserve your delay repay rights, you'd have needed to travel Swanwick to Fareham and connected onto your booked service there. You'd have certainly got away with starting short on your Advance at Winchester given you were supposed to change trains there anyway, but that doesn't make it a valid thing to do.

All of the above assumes you really did hold an Advance single from Fareham to Reading rather than splits. As has been pointed out above, there don't appear to be any Advance fares priced between those two stations.

Are you sure it's not two or more Advance tickets that you hold for the journey you originally planned? This could change the answer to your question.
