Hi folks!

Looking for some advice here

I travelled from Dundee - London KX recently with VTEC and unfortunately on both my outward and return journeys my train was delayed by a particularly galling amount of time.

I am aware of the delay repay scheme offered however they request sight of your travel tickets but both Dundee and KX have barriers so I put my tickets in them without thinking however what I do have is a booking confirmation from thetrainline.com with all the relevant details, would VTEC be satisfied with this or would they demand my tickets?

Any help / input would be appreciated!

Email: customers@virgintrainseastcoast.com

Give them all the information that you can. The booking confirmation email, any receipts/reservation coupons included with your tickets, etc.

I always use email to do delay repay and never the online form, I just attach any evidence to the email.

Reason for that is the online form only allows cheque or paper voucher. Cheques are a hassle for me as I never need to go into the bank. If you email them they'll happily credit your delay repay to your online account, to me that's much less hassle than paper vouchers or cheques. Just make it extremely clear at the top of your email you want paid in eVouchers and give the email address your online account is under.

In your case using email allows you to also specify exactly the reasons why you don't have the ticket.

I've been told that in most cases you will get the compensation, particularly if the ticket was tied to a certain train but they may take longer to investigate.

I would imagine that you'll have a high chance of success if you held an Advance ticket (which ties you to a specific train), which is probably quite likely for such a long journey booked through The Train Line. I'd give it a go - be honest to them throughout (as I'm sure you will be). As long as the confirmation states the trains you were on, you'll probably stand a decent chance.

And do let us know how you get on. :)

I've used the barriers at KGX many times, and never had my ticket retained!

Out of interest, why did you use thetrainline.com?

I was once in a similar position (ticket bought for, and used by, someone else whose ticket was retained at Leeds and didn't think to ask for it to be retrieved), but the tickets were booked with VTEC themselves, and I sent them a screenshot of the booking confirmation and they were happy with that.

Hi Yorkie!

I'm the same, I have never had it retained however in this case it was, who knows as to the reason!

I use thetrainline.com just because that's who I've always used to be honest, never seen the hassle of having multiple accounts with different operators.

I will ensure that I do this!

No need to open several accounts with different TOCs. Most if not all TOCs allow you to book tickets anywhere in the country. I purchased a first class advance single from Kings Cross to Aveimore on Northern's website minus any booking fees! Even Redspottedhankey don't charge booking fees! The trainline.com is nothing more than a con!

You could have one account with one operator, and save yourself fees.

Or you could use trainsplit.com which only charges a fee if it's found a cheaper ticket combination for you (you keep 90% of any savings; the site retains 10% of any savings as a fee)

KX always returns my tickets. I don't know about Dundee, but if it's like other Scoteail stations I know,Glasgow QS or Edinburgh, it will eat them.

I wish it was clearer which barriers retained tickets as I need them for my expense claims. Collection receipts don't give journey details and printouts are not secure.

Don't use the Trainline (unless your boss requires it for expenses, business account etc) as they charge unneccesary fees and use misleading advertising. Visit the website of the train company you use, such as Virgin East Coast or even Hull Trains (who, incidentally, both offer Nectar Points) to purchase train tickets for any journey in the country.

Barriers can be programmed differently from day to day so there's no guarantee they'll return your tickets; approach barrier staff in future as they'll normally have no issue with you retaining your ticket.

As others have said, you don't need EVER to book through thetrainline, all rail operators have to sell each others tickets at the publicly available price. So for example, if you decide to book all rail travel through East Midlands Trains the prices for other operators will be the same as on thetrainline.

If you see any value in Nectar you're best booking through a FirstGroup operator as, unlike Virgin, they give points on all rail travel (with Virgin you won't even get points if you book on the wrong coast site!)

EMT and TPE also give you cashback, so instead of paying a booking fee, you get paid a small amount as an incentive to book through them.

So I'd say Transpennine Express is a good option if you want a single point of purchase.

Sometimes booking direct pays off. VTEC has a seat map for their own services, also sale fares are generally only available direct too.

The barriers at Kings Cross don't keep tickets.

I've had mine taken before (although it was a Great Northern ticket I doubt it makes a difference)

Because most tickets have onward validity they shouldn't keep them

Ticket barriers can be programmed to retain tickets with certain destinations, and pass back tickets with different destinations.

Manchester Victoria barriers, for example, will retain single or return tickets with a destination of "Manchester Stns", but give back tickets with "Manchester CTLZ" or other destinations.

Worth pointing out that if you want points on every journey you need to book on a FirstGroup site. Virgin only give points on their own franchise (so if you book west coast tickets on the east coast site you get nothing).

I was referring to London Terminals being valid beyond Kings Cross

Tickets to 'London Terminals' at Kings Cross shouldn't be retained by the barriers because they are valid on the Underground to Moorgate/Old Street/Highbury & Islington.

I'm not sure what happens if the ticket is routed 'VTEC only' though.
