Hello

i recently travelled to Scotland. My journey involved 3 trains and 3 train companies (Northern, Arriva and Scotrail).

The Arriva leg was delayed by 28 minutes. The train arrived outside Glasgow station and then waited at the boundary for a platform. This is where the 28 minute delay occurred. That delay meant I only had 2 minutes (instead of 26) to get off my train run from carriage F up the station, around the station and then get through the barriers to board the next train.

Arriva have given me the run around, first claiming there was no delay, then claiming I did not have a valid ticket, finally after me sending them upteem supporting documents they claimed because he overall journey was only delayed by 10 mins there was no compensation payable. Claiming Delay Repay only engages if the overall journey is delayed by more than 15 mins not individual legs by 28 minutes. Which seems preposterous. Is that right?

If you have through tickets (including splits) it is at final destination only, so if had 26 minutes to connect, missed that connection, but next connecting train is soon after, and then get to final destination only 10 minutes late, that is all that is counted, doesn't matter if you were 35 minutes late at some intermediate points

I assume you mean Avanti.

Delay repay is based on what actually happened. As you were only delayed by 10 minutes at your final destination, then Avanti is correct that no compensation is due.

If, on the other hand, you had failed to catch the Scotrail train because your connection time was shortened to 2 minutes, then you would have been entitled to get the next Scotrail service.

You are not obliged to run and attempt to catch the train with only 2 minutes to connect. It is recognised that 15 minutes are required to connect at Glasgow Central.

As the next Scotrail train might have been 15, or 30, or 60 minutes later, you would likely have been delayed at the final destination by at least that much, and thus entitled to claim delay repay from Avanti for the relevant amount.

(I am not sure where the 2 minutes comes from though. With a scheduled connection time of 26 minutes and a delay of 28 minutes, the Scotrail train should have departed 2 minutes before you arrived at Glasgow.)

When faced with a situation like this in the future, you can decide whether it's more important to get to the final destination on time with no compensation, or to wait and claim compensation.

Three trains were on 1 December 2023 Advance single ticket (x2) leg 1 to Preston (on Northern 1 of the singles) then leg 2 Preston to Glasgow (Arriva) then leg 3 was short 25 min Scotrail train to final destination (both leg 2 and 3 covered by second single).

Seems unfair to aggregate delays when three different train companies and one was clearly massively delayed forcing me to run around the station like a man mad. Resulting in second (cuplable train company) escaping liability

They've assessed your claim correctly - as you mention, you weren't delayed into your destination by over 15 minutes, so there is no liability to you for anything. Sounds like a good result, you were 10 minutes delayed, not so bad.

Not expected to run round the station, if had taken the whole minimum station connecting time then got next connecting train and been over 30 minutes late, they would have paid.

(Of course if the next availalble service is 2 hours later it is understandable that you choose to run and arrive close to on time, rather than waiting but having a free journey.)

(I am not sure where the 2 minutes comes from though. With a scheduled connection time of 26 minutes and a delay of 28 minutes, the final train should have departed 2 minutes before you arrived.)
Apologies i was more interested in getting off the train at Glasgow to note the precise arrival on platform but it was after 9.38 (conductor told everyone to claim) because that was when the train on the platform had to depart and my train had to travel to platform (so circa 09.42) when it should have been there for about 9.16. Short travel departed at 09.44

Good result? I have health issues and needed to make my connection. 26 minutes was ample time to get round the station not 2 minutes !

And i doubt they would have paid. They never accepted the Glasgow train never made it to the platform until 9.42. They logged its arrival at Glasgow at about 9.17 (but it was sat outside Glasgow waiting ... not on the platform then).

Actually, the industry data records the arrival as being 25 minutes late.

There is no requirement to run; train companies communications typically discourage running.

If you felt you had to make that connection (or if you felt some external pressure e.g. by someone you were meeting) then that's your prerogative.

But the train company did not force it.

Delays are not 'aggregated' as such; what matters is purely how much delay there was at the final destination.

I think it does apply to the arrival time at the end of your journey.
