Hi Guys,

Quick question.

I travelled to London the other day from DOW to KGX. I have a season ticket between DOW to CBG and purchased a CBG to KGX return.

On the return i was delayed over two hours. We got to ELY fine but then the train was cancelled. We then was left for two hours at Ely waiting for the replacement bus which eventually was cancelled too and we where put in taxies.

My Question is can I claim for the whole journey or just the part on my season ticket?

Thanks

Yes, you can claim for your entire journey from Kings Cross to Downham Market: as per Condition 14.1 of the National Rail Conditions of Travel, you are entitled to be considered to be making one journey when you combine multiple tickets.

For this to apply, you must fulfill at least one of several qualifying conditions - for example, calling at the changeover station(s) if using purely normal walk-up tickets, or passing through (whether calling at or not) the changeover station if using a season ticket plus another ticket. That is clearly the case here as the service you used calls at, and goes via, Cambridge.

Compensation is therefore payable on the basis of the combination of tickets held for your journey from King's Cross to Downham Market; the percentage of each ticket paid in compensation will of course differ, as a season ticket has a "deemed" daily value based off the assumption that it is used for 5 days a week (and, to account for typical annual holiday, 232 days a year if it's an annual season ticket). Assuming your ultimate delay was 2 hours or more, you will be entitled to 100% of whatever ticket you used from King's Cross to Cambridge (whether single or return), plus 100% of the deemed daily value of your season ticket.

It might not be possible to use the normal claim form on Great Northern's website in order to put in your claim, if it doesn't cater for a combination of tickets (many train companies' forms unfortunately don't). If that is the case, simply contact customer services and write a concise, short and clear email setting out your application for compensation, the journey you intended to make (i.e. your planned itinerary and in particular your scheduled arrival time), a list of the tickets you used, and an explanation of the delay you incurred.

If you have any problems feel free to come back here for further advice.

The whole journey, though you might have to explain a bit.

Great Northern - Good luck.

In my experience they always pay the wrong amount for Delay Repay on a combination of a season ticket and a day return, even if you go to the trouble of clearly explaining the amount due and why.

My record so far has been three re-submissions before someone dealt with it correctly.
