I bought 4 advance single hard copy tickets direct from Redruth railway station ticket office to go to Salisbury (I asked for 'split' tickets with the split at the changing station as this was most convenient for me being the cheapest way, restricted to certain trains that suited me, with only one change and a longer overall journey time).
On the way up, Redruth to Exeter St David's and Exeter St David's to Salisbury was fine, plenty of time for train connection and platform change and only minor delays of 5 minutes or so. However, travelling back on Monday 3 July, there was an incident on the first train, Salisbury to Exeter St David's which meant I missed my connecting train with GWR where I had a seat reserved.
The SWR train ended up being delayed over 1 hour and had to skip some stops. I was due to have 45 minutes at Exeter for the change of trains. The next direct train due to arrive in Exeter was predicted to be full with standing only and I was advised by train enquiries staff to instead get on the next train to Plymouth, change there and catch the next train to Redruth rather than wait for the next and slightly later direct train (so increasing the number of trains and changes by one).
I was told I didn't need to buy another ticket. All the next suitable trains I could get were delayed arriving in Exeter anyway. I got on the slightly delayed Plymouth train and had a seat and room for luggage. Arrived slightly delayed (for that train) in Plymouth, changed platform and got the next direct train to Redruth which was also predicted to be full and standing only. I did luckily get a seat but luggage racks were full and obstructing the corridor (including mine at the beginning).
I arrived at my final destination over 30 minutes later than if I'd been able to get the train that I had a ticket and seat reservation for. It was a stressful, tiring, unpredictable and more active journey (not because staff were working to rule per se but due to this hopefully isolated incident on the first train) with no opportunity to get additional refreshments (no catering on trains which I knew in advance and I had some with me but no opportunity to utilise facilities at Exeter train station which I was expecting or 'chill').
So what do I claim on Delay Repay as these are 2 Advance Single tickets? Just the whole cost of the single ticket with SWR as over 1 hour delayed to my connection? Or the cost of both single advance tickets and whole journey delayed by over 30 minutes and who from - SWR? I'm a bit confused so any advice appreciated.
