As there were later trains which could have got you to Southampton, albeit not direct, I don’t think there is any need for Southern to refund you for your taxi fare.

Now I know this information I think the OP has no cause to claim a refund. I thought it really was the last train.

I am confused by the "later trains" mentioned. I can't see anything in the current timetable after 2231. Have there been timetable changes since 22 June ?

The 22:31 is a Southwestern service connecting at Hilsea to the Southwestern service from Portsmouth to Southampton.

The earlier direct service is operated by Southern, departing Havant at 22:28.

As the OP has claimed delay/repay from Southern, the presumption is that it was the 22:28 direct service which was cancelled that Friday.

What is not clear is whether the OP was made aware that direct Southern service was cancelled before the 22:31 had actually departed.
