Last Sunday (15th June 2014), my cousin returned home from her parents' house in Chapel-en-le-Frith to Weymouth. She had an Off Peak Return ticket (she said it cost her £93 but I can’t see that fare on BR Fares, so I’ll have to double check that one) and had used The Trainline app to plan her journey.

Her itinerary was:

However, her train from Birmingham departed 14 minutes late and arrived into Bristol Temple Meads at 17:41, 8 minutes late. This caused her to miss her connection to Weymouth by seconds. As a result of this, she then had to catch:

As it happened, her last train was also running late and her actual arrival time into Weymouth was 22:44- two and three quarter hours later than planned.

I believe she kept to all the minimum connection times- she used The Trainline app to plan the journey as I have mentioned, and I’ve doubled checked the minimum connection time at Bristol Temple Meads and it is 10 minutes, which is the time that was left between trains there, so I believe she is covered, just.

With all this in mind, she should be due compensation of a full refund of her ticket price. The only problem is that her original plan was four different trains, yet there is only space for three journey legs on CrossCountry’s Delay Repay form.

Can you please check that she is definitely entitled to compensation and, if so, tell me how she would submit this claim?

Thank you

Ryan

Seems fine to me.

If she has the ticket then (as per the instructions here) she can cut it diagonally in two, scan a photo of it, and email the photo to Cross Country, with the details of her planned and actual journey, along with her name and address. This means no need to use the form!

Thank you for your help! I didn't even read that Delay Repay information on CrossCountry's website- I went straight to the form. I'll let her know.

Thanks again :)

Technically it's compensation to the value of the ticket price (ie, it's not a refund) but yes XC are liable. Keep us posted!

Out of interest, what's the reasoning behind cutting the ticket in half? Certainly whenever I've done delay repay (admittedly not on XC) I've left the tickets as they were and not had a problem.

Presumably they're worried you may try to additionally obtain a refund from the point of sale for an abandoned journey.

I have sent XC a picture of an intact ticket with no problem. I am guessing that it is to show that a period return or Anytime ticket will not be used again.

Just realised that I haven't updated you all on this. I got a phone call from her at the end of last month to say that she had received a full compensation of her ticket price- all £93 of it (in rail vouchers though of course).

Thank you for your help :)
