I was travelling on an off-peak return last weekend; the return train I’d planned to get was cancelled (TPE leg of a Noethern/TPE journey) and I hopped on the next available journey according to an online journey planner. It was a different route/TOC (Norther/EMR/Avanti) but equally valid. I arrived at my destination around 40 minutes late.

I’ve put in a delay repay claim to TPE and been awarded a full refund since they calculated my delay as 120+ minutes, which it absolutely wasn’t. Wondering if they’ve calculated it wrong because of using another route/TOC (which wouldn’t have been valid had I been on an Advance - do they take that into account?) or because the alternative train I took was marked as ‘reservation compulsory’ and ‘sold out’ (but I ended up with a table to myself in the unreserved section!).

Am I obliged to tell them or can/should I just accept as it’s their mistake and I filled in the form accurately?

I also put in a delay repay claim to Northern for a small delay on the outbound journey; presumably I shouldn’t get that if I’ve had the value of the whole return journey in compensation. Do the different systems talk to each other or should I contact them to tell them?

I would just accept. There is a cost attached to dealing with their mistake which would make it a potential lose-lose situation for you to contact TPE.

Using the refund for additional travel would turn it into a win-win scenario.

This happens all the time. I spent some time trying to return it when it happened to me first (it was a fairly big sum) but couldn't get them to pay attention so donated the overpayment to charity. It happened again recently with a much smaller amount and I just kept that.
