I bought a split ticket journey myself from TfW and had the following issues today 3rd October 2025
Adv single 1st TfW 1735 Abergavenny to Crewe
Adv single 1st TfW 1930 Crewe to Stockport
Adv single standard TPE 2023 Stockport to Sheffield

On arrival at Crewe 9 minutes late there was a train fault and an onboard announcement was made saying the next service to Manchester was a Northern stopper. So I like most joined this service as the extent of the TfW delay wasn't known.
The TPE from Stockport was also, fortunately delayed, likely arriving into Sheffield 36 minutes or so late. I'm writing this on the TPE!

My question is how do I apply for delay repay? Along with not using the 1st class ticket on TFW from Crewe to Stockport.
As one claim to TfW or separate to each for the relevant journeys.

Thanks in advance.

One claim to TfW against the full cost of the full journey.

Claim is against the first operator in the chain to delay you.

In addition you would be entitled to downgrade reimbursement for not getting first class on the Crewe to Stockport leg. Fairly straightforward to calculate as you had a ticket just for that leg, it's usually the difference between the equivalent standard and first class tiers. TfW price all their first class tickets 50% higher than standard ones, which makes it even easier to calculate - you just get 1/3 back.

My claim for the whole journey to TfW was unsuccessful. They have used a 'set process', say TPE caused my delay and have passed my claim onto their Customer Relations.
Should I appeal to TfW? Or wait for a response from TPE.

Appeal straight away. Don't wait however long it might take TPE to get around to processing it, passing it back to TfW, and it then sitting in TfW's inbox.

It is not uncommon for claims to be rejected initially, particularly as in this case the speed of response indicates that it was probably processed automatically.

I was trying find out / confirm who to apply to as the TfW, then Northern service that I used did get me into Stockport in time (albeit both running late) for my TPE, which was also late and caused my overall late arrival. The info on various websites seems to suggest it is to the TOC that caused the delay. If I appeal to TfW what should I say? Is it because I bought the tickets from TfW so my claim is with them?

No, where you bought the tickets has no bearing on who a Delay Repay claim should be made against.

So you're saying that the late-running of your TfW service didn't actually cause the delay in your arrival at Sheffield? In that case TfW are indeed responsible so they're correct to forward the case into TPE. TfW still need to pay you the downgrade reimbursement though.

According to Real Time Trains your original TFW service arrived into Stockport 2026 and the TPE was due out at 2023, so you would have missed it, but as it didn't leave until 2101 you caught it. (The Northern stopper reached Stockport at 2038.) I think the claim sticks with TFW. They are lucky the TPE was late. If you had missed it you wouldn't have reached Sheffield until 2226, 1h21m late.
