Yesterday I bought an off peak day return between Whaley Bridge and Manchester Piccadilly.
But the line between Buxton and Hazel Grove was closed all day. So I took a service bus to Stockport and continued by train for there.
And returned the same way: train to Stockport then bus home.

Am I able to claim any compensation for this disruption?

Was ticket acceptance announced? If so, this should have taken care of the bus fare. If not, and no alternative transport was arranged, then you could claim back the cost from Northern.

You can also claim Delay Repay based on the arrival time at Piccadilly of the train you were intending to catch, compared to your actual arrival time.

The train was cancelled so no actual arrival time.
And since there were no other trains that day ...

Cancelling your original ticket and abandoning the journey for a full refund then buying tickets for the journey you did take is the correct approach.

But you said you took the train from Stockport, right? So the actual arrival time of that train, vs the scheduled arrival time of your intended train, is what you claim for.
