Delay Repay - abandoned journey

My daughter was travelling from Cardiff to Oxford on 24th November, on an off-peak day single. She left Cardiff Central at 14.20 intending to change at Swindon and Didcot Parkway. However, her train was much delayed between Bristol Parkway and Swindon, being diverted via Bath, arriving at Swindon over an hour late.

Having reached Swindon, and fearful of further delays and cancellations, she abandoned her rail journey and continued to Oxford by bus.

My question is whether she is entitled to claim delay repay for such an abandoned journey?

As she arrived 71 minutes late at Swindon, and the next connecting train to Didcot would have caused even more delay, I would have thought absolutely! I have in the past claimed delay repay for a journey which I was unable to complete by train in similar circumstances.

She did complete the journey after all, and presumably she arrived in Oxford >60 minutes after she was scheduled to even though she went by bus.

Yes, and it is acceptable to claim for the delay to Swindon where the journey was abandoned. The compensation should be the full fare paid - if it isn't she can claim a refund for the difference between the fare paid and the fare used so, wither way, the full fare is recoverable.

Agreed that it would be fraud to claim for a delay that you didn't actually incur, such as claiming for the time you would have arrived at destination had you completed the journey by train, when in fact you didn't. However, on the DR form, you are required to enter your planned itinerary, which in this case was to Oxford, and the delay time incurred in getting there. In most cases, you are not required to say anything about your actual journey.
