Delay on split ticket - what to do?

I'm travelling Didcot to Plymouth this evening. I have split tickets at Bath and Tiverton for the journey.
I was going to take the 19:12 from Didcot to Bristol and change there onto the XC train to Plymouth. Unfortunately it seems the XC train has already racked up a 30 min delay according to RealTime Trains (it did start at Glasgow), which means that I won't get to my accomodation before their check-in closes.

Can anyone advise what I'm permitted to do in this circumstance? Do I still have to go on a journey that has trains stopping at those stations or can I try swapping to an alternative because of the delay? And in fact are there any that would get me at Plymouth about 23:00 at the latest?

You have to comply with the restrictions you've placed on yourself by splitting the tickets (that you travel on trains which call at the split points). However speaking to the guard of a non-stop service prior to departure and explaining the issue would quite possibly result in permission to travel.

The problem is, there are no nochange services. The other services go through Reading (then direct to Plymouth) via a different route, so....

If you are quick, the 1842 will get you into Temple Meads at 1943. The 1945 XC is currently 28 late so won't be able to make it up before Bristol. It will get you into Plymouth at around 2215 assuming it stays half an hour late.

No, Not likely to be able to catch that; currently on a bus which is following a tractor....!
But I did notice the preceding XC train was delayed too, though not by as much.
If I'm lucky and it delays by 10 more mins I might connect onto that, otherwise... Hmmm

Or if you can get the 1856 from Didcot to Bristol Parkway arr 1941, you would have a good chance of catching the delayed 1933 to Plymouth.

If you arrive in Plymoth 30 or more minutes late though, depending on the TOC you travel on, claim delay repay!

Which accommodation are you checking into? I've never heard of an hotel or hostel on all my world travels that has a latest check in time. Perhaps a phone call to them would help to let them know your running late on the train...

B&B often do, however provided it is not too late (varies by business) they can be accommodating with a call.

Delays happen. Speak to the accommodation. If the accommodation won't accept you arriving late then I personally would not use them, or would get travel insurance.

As it happens, you may be in luck as the 1306 Edinburgh-Plymouth (due Bristol TM 1943-1945) is currently 30 late near Cam & Dursley and you might just make that at Bristol TM.

Aim to be at whatever doors will be nearest the subway (someone may be able to advise if you're unsure..

You are permitted to take trains which call at Bath & Tiverton, and if you're delayed by 30+ minutes you're entitled to Delay Repay. If there's a faster journey opportunity available which would get you to your destination earlier, and keep any compensation payable to you to a minimum, it's worth seeking the advice of staff in a position to authorise a route that would otherwise not be permitted by the ticket(s) you hold as discretion might be beneficial to both parties.

Off-topic I know, but there's one B&B that I stay at frequently where they'll actually call me if I'm on the late side for arrival, just to make sure everything is okay!

I think he'd have made it, as his train arrived about 3 minutes before the 1306 Edinburgh-Plymouth departed.
