Work on Bourne End Railway Bridge may have been delayed last weekend ...

Lorry rolls off the edge of Bourne End Marina crushing boat

This is the scene at Bourne End Marina today as a lorry carrying tonnes of scaffolding fell off the side and landed on top of a tug boat.

Red-faced workers at the scene blamed a 'mechanical failure' after the rear wheels of the lorry rolled back over the edge of the marina, in Wharf Lane, and on to the small tug a few feet below at just before 3pm.

No-one was harmed, and the lorry will remain hanging over the edge until a crane can recover it tomorrow morning.

A spokesman for the marina said the incident was caused by a problem with the brake and added he had called out when he saw the vehicle begin to roll but it was too late.

"I have never seen anything like this in my whole time here," he added.

"Someone could have been in the boat or someone could have been stood there not taking notice."

The spokesman added the tug, which was owned by the marina, was 'probably a write off'.

The scaffolding lorry was being used for work on Bourne End railway bridge.
