ATW are extending the Cardiff to Penarths on a Sunday to/from Ystrad Mynach, 5 additionals on the Rhymney Valley line in each direction, although they don't actually start until 8th January. There is a 2 hour gap between trains at present but when they run 20 minutes apart not really filling the gap.

Still no eNRT or Working timetables on Network rail's website, pretty poor considering its just over 2 weeks until start of new timetables but then I seem to recall a similar scenario in May......

The same post has been made twice a year for about 5 years IIRC. I think you've answered your own question though, they've always appeared nearer the date?

And when it does appear it will probably be a complete mess, fictional timings, missing pages etc etc...

The new December to May Network Rail timetable is now available at
http://www.networkrail.co.uk/aspx/3828.aspx

And is, once again, incomplete.

No single-volume timetable (maybe we'll be lucky and get it sometime in February, if the last timetable change is any guide).

Worse, even the individual files are now incomplete. Where are the sleeper service tables? The 'new' station index is woefully inadequate. And all the information (eg. TOC details, crossing London, etc.) that used to 'wrap' the timetable appears to have vanished.

The missing sleeper info is what hit me straight away. The services appear in the main tables, but there's no info available now on things like berth occupy/vacate times.

Love Table 49. Now have trains extended to start at Nottingham 'Eastcroft' amongst other oddities in the table.

Discovered an oddity this evening - assuming it is a permanent change with the Winter timetable?

1L14 15:55 Liverpool Lime Street to Worksop and Norwich ... the portion that detaches at Nottingham now forms the 18:56 through to Worksop.

First time that Liverpool and Worksop have had direct service?

There's also a similar Mansfield Woodhouse service in the evening, although i don't know how new that is.
Not sure if the same still happens with the Derby train as well

The unit did the same in the previous timetable. Its really just an operational note that has somehow got into the published tables, like all the other wierd entries on table 49. As far as I can see there are ECS shunts off nearly all of the 4-car Liverpool trains so quite why some have appeared as duplicates escapes me - I did wonder if it needs a separate schedule for CRS to get reservations in the right portion.
;
The duplicated timings for Virgin Voyagers between Euston and Chester weren't in the tables distributed for comments but have reappeared in the published version.

I did once suggest directly to EMT that their early morning stock loan to Greater Anglia should appear as a through service. Presumably would inconvenience the train presentation team at Norwich, but immediately add an attractive daily through service from Lowestoft to the North West.

Is "train presentation team" corporate bollocks speak for the cleaners nowadays?

Similar to a new hospital that opened near us 5 years ago. There was a sign which said "Diagnostics". Everybody was asking where "X-Ray" was in these days of corporate bollocks. <(<(

Unlike BR where this would be easy, the trains are now operated by two separate operators. I don't think it can be shown or if it can be it probably be a manual intervention somewhere.

It exists in other places.

For example, Northern/Scotrail on the Newcastle - Glasgow Central via Carlisle trains.

The only problem is that the train would either have to show as East Midlands Trains on the CIS screens Lowestoft - Norwich, or Greater Anglia Norwich - Liverpool (which might confuse someone at Manchester  )

Apologies for fuelling the corporate bollocks bonfire ;)

GA would object, but one solution to the problem causton raises is to let EMT operate the train throughout, although GA might object to what might be seen as an ORCATS raid on their little commuter route into Norwich.

This one has passed me by. So EMT lend GA a unit in the morning, which does a turn to Lowestoft and back, and then this continues directly to Liverpool - but the service from Lowstoft is not advertised as a direct train?

I'd have thought it would be useful to some punters, even if they were only going to Thetford or some such.

It can't be because of the 2 separate companies involved. Bureaurocracy.

Yes, I understand the "reasoning" (such as it is), I meant the diagram arrangement itself had passed me by. When did this start?

It's in the frequently requested diagrams thread.

It started when Central Trains were broken up. They used to work the last Norwich - Cambridge service, and the first Cambridge - Norwich service. These were transferred to NXEA as was, but it meant a unit was away at Cambridge at night and couldn't get back in time for this Lowestoft working.

Meanwhile East Midlands had a unit doing nothing, so a deal was struck.

It sits at Norwich from 07.20 to 07.57, so you've time to get off, order a cooked breakfast and get back on again. Hardly a through train.

That's more bureaucratic than the current arrangement!

It's all down to whose safety case the train runs under. This Lowestoft working is a GA train with a GA crew over a route in GA's safety case. All they gave to do is hire the unit.

Why does the northern / Scotrail agreement work where the same unit does Newcastle- Glasgow. Surely if the wanted to do the same thing the same process could be used. (Although agree. 30 minutes stand over is stretching through a little.)

Exactly, if it were advertised as a through train the forum posse would be saying how ridiculous to have a through train with a 37 minute wait at Norwich.

When the new GA fleet comes along, it may be this hire arrangement will cease. Then you would have to go through all the pain of withdrawing a through service.

The current arrangement is the most sensible, it only seems to offend some on here ;)
