Oh great. There's been a notice up at Norwich saying the early-morning direct Great Yarmouth - London train will be a shorter train since the Sudbury crash. I'm not entirely sure how these two things are related but still ...

I am not going to be happy going from Norwich to London if it's not a Mk3. My whole life it's been Mk3s apart from a period where it was Turbostars and I wasn't happy then.

Also, do you have a link to these timetables.

While I can't yet find anything on the Dec 2010 timetables, I can easily find the amended timetables due to the rolling stock shortage thanks to the Sudbury accident:

Just click on the link on the main home page and it gives you a link to the affected trains.

Well a 321 has more space then a 170 and you do not have to listen to the constant droaning noise of the the engine.

As far as I understand, the 360s to Stowmarket (which are still yet to be trialled) and the 321s to Norwich are there to bolster the service rather than to replace any.

I also believe the P'borough and Lowestoft 170's are planned to start and terminate at Ipswich.

The timetables are here.

One less 90 is required from the timetable change, so this alone indicates the change.

(P.S. has only been Mk3s since about 2004).

Only 321s on the Norwich services are 17.02 Lst-Nrw (used to go Harwich Int'l) & 19.30 return (new service). Not in any way a replacement for loco haulage, just there were problems terminating Stowmarket so set will run through & the 20.08 Ips-Lst will start back from Norwich.

My bet for the most overcrowded main line trains (SX) from December:-

06.25 Norwich to Liverpool St - Currently this train is usually full from Manningtree & standing from Colchester. The new timetable sees the trains either side going from 06.10/06.40 to 06.00/06.50. To make matters worse the relief EMU from Stowmarket follows it & the next 06.50 does not stop Colchester. The latter makes sense but Colchester commuters who prefer the Intercity won't be happy.

18.10 Liverpool St to Norwich - This replaces the 18.00 (full & standing) & the 18.20. No good trying to catch the earlier 17.50 as is often worse for crowding now.

NX are expecting much critisism from the changes to the peak timetable but are hoping commuters alter their travelling patterns for a more comfortable journey. Lets just hope no short formed sets are sent out each morning :-?

Just out of interest which route is losing 3 car 170's to cover Cambridge to Norwich are they gaining the displaced 156 and 153s from the Ipswich to Cambridge run?

Through Lowestoft/Peterborough to Liverpool St serices are being withdrawn. Usually 3 units are south of Ipswich at any one time & it is these that will operate Norwich-Cambridge. the current 2-cars on this route will transfer to Ipswich-Cambridge. Most Lowestoft & Peterborough services will remain as a 2/3 car 170 mix. 153s will be diagrammed for Felixstowe & some of the new Saxmundham shuttles. NXEA will have a small surplus of one unit which will be used when Beccles passing loop is finally installed.

Unit layovers at Norwich will be extende from december giving much more flexability & help service recovery during disruptions.

Excuse my ignorance, but are three additional EMUs needed to cover the DMU paths south of Ipswich?

Yes sort of mate. However they will just be utilised out of the GE 321 pool & may operate as 4 or 8 car sets depending on time of day/special events. It's not ideal for those who have got to like their through trains but will offer so much more flexability on the main line into London.

Its been loco hauled for years, however the class 90, MK3s and the DVT were only introduced with the advent of ONE Railway. Before this (ie when it was Anglia Railways and Intercity) it was Mk2's, DBSO and class 86.

Providing its reliable, clean and has plenty of space to me it doesnt matter whether its a unit or loco hauled,

I really don't remember Class 86s at all to be honest least of all DBSOs but I do remember the Swallow livery and the orange BR interior of the coaches, I guess I was 13 when they bought in the DVTs and the 90s and I only really became interested in trains when I was 16 so that makes sense.

There's an article in one of the latest mags (?RAIL) that loco-hauled stock may be introduced on Norfolk branch lines to cover unit shortages. Similar to what happened earlier this year I guess.

I really hope so. If I see another 153 at Yarmouth I'm going to punch a monkey.

You have monkeys down in Great Yarmouth!? I mean your further south than where I live but still tropical rainforests I thought you only got things like that nearer the equator?

They are 'breaking up' an Inter City set, and places coaches in other sets to make them all longer, thus loss of 1 set

That is exactly what should be happening as all extra costs should get fully re-imbursed from the insurance of the numpty sewage company driver.

NXEA gave a brief taster of the new timetable last night when the 17.02 ex-Liverpool Street DID go through to Norwich. It was caused by the failure & cancellation of the 14.30 Norwich-Liv St & 17.00 return due to pan probs. The 17.02 Harwich Int'l was as booked to Manningtree then diverted calling at Ipswich, Stowmarket, Diss & Norwich due 19.06. This is almost identical to the schedule from December. Bet the regulars on the 'Anglian' where not amused <(.

Probably not, but credit to NXEA for running an additional service to Norwich and not just hiring coaches like would have happened a few years ago

Or just advised passengers to get the next service which would have happened more recently

I assume Harwich passengers just had to wait for another service then?

Was this formed of a pair of 321s I assume? which liveries were they then? (sorry just coming up with ideas for a simulator activity on Great Eastern!)

As I was on it, normal Harwich set formed 446 (ONEish) + 328 (NX White) +443 (GE). Always has a SDO /4 at each end as it is off the morning Southminster and therefore sticks the same sets for days, weeks and months at a time.

'Harwich' passengers there are none as its only calls at Parkeston Quay and its way before the boat trains just a convenient place to turn round!

Booked for a 321 now as with many other of the 'through' services due to dmu shortages.

Would not have used coaches on mainline unless severe delay as road cannot compete with train timings & with another 3 trains within an hour passengers would just wait & pile into the next available service.
