I know this is everso slightly off topic. In this instance - the guard (yourself) has then stored the card number & the *** digits on the back on his/her work phone. Surely this then becomes and Identity thieves paradise after a couple of phone calls?

Just an idea - related to the work I am working on ATM.

The number won't be stored on the phone unless the guard saves it or remembers the numbers and puts them in later.

Sorry - I thought that it is standard. My phone stores every button I press during the call, the resulting number is 0770123456713 Options 1 & 3 will be stored on the end.

Yes, the numbers will be added on the end, but the phone has already connected and made the call so the logging has already happened. Unless you now choose to save the number then the 1 and the 3 will be lost.

The Diones simply say 'declined' they do not ask you to phone for authorisation.

Certain TOCs guards are no longer able to phone for authorisation for security reasons.

1) The card number needs to be given over the phone, this maybe heard by others on a busy train.
2) You can't take the card somewhere more secure like the cab as you can't take it out of the view of the customer.
3) Certain lines have virtually no mobile phone reception.

TOCs instructions are to issue UPFN if passenger has no other means of payment. This is not a lazy option and would take longer than a phone call.
We gave up using Diones ages ago as they were rubbish, and now use Thyrons. But these only say declined as well. Nothing asks you to call. When you swipe the card it asks you to enter a authorisation number. You phone up the automated service which does not need you to read the card number out, and get this code, which you then type into the Avantix. You could put any old random number in, but the code will be recorded on the banks system so when the TOC presents the transaction for payment the bank will associate the authorisation code with the card number and pay the money. If there is no correct code, there is no guarantee the payment will go through.

I am relieved to hear that it is a nationwide problem, thought it was just me :D quite often when I ring up for authorisation you get a recorded message saying something like "we're busy at the moment for all transactions under £100 use code xyz". To be honest I usually issue a UFN if it doesn't work.

I don't think voice authorisations require to give the three digits on the back, as they are only meant to be used for customer not present transactions.
