3 questions really:

When was the station layout simplified (post 1960)?

How did signal EBZ39 interwork with Betteshanger's Distant (No. 1?) when it was converted to colour light?
No idea about the first. The system does look a bit odd, but I presume that to get a green both boxes needed to have their levers Reversed. If Deal’s was Normal you would have a red, whatever Betteshanger’s was. If Betteshanger’s was Normal, then Deal would get a Yellow when it Reversed the lever, unless the signal was working as a semi-automatic, if it could. Was it a three or four aspect?

An SRS diagram of 1962 shows EBZ39 to be a 4-aspect. At some point prior, this was a semaphore, therefore, I assume Betteshanger Colliery had a semaphore distant unless the section was so short, it was mounted on the same post as EBZ39...?

I looked at the SRS diagram, but I can’t see why there are four aspects as there is only the Starter beyond and it is a long way to Sandwich. Could a four aspect have been erected in the expectation that TCB would soon be installed: if so, that one or two aspects of the signal are out of use is not indicated on the diagram? Some very rough working with the inadequate details that I have to hand would suggest that Deal’s Starter and Betteshanger’s Home would be on the same post, but the diagrams don’t seem to reflect this.

Part of my conundrum but thanks for trying. I coudn't understand why it shows 4-aspect - 3 I could possibly understand. Unless it was Deal's Down Advanced Starting No. 39 and Betteshanger's No. 1 Distant on the same post, but in colour light form if this arrangement was ever to exist? I've never heard of a colour light version of a semaphore home and distant on the same post

I think I have a vague recollection of seeing Betteshanger box from a passing train as a kid but the mind does play tricks and it may have been abolished in the 1960s...

The box was opened in 1922 or 1923 as a non-Block Post, upgraded to Block Post January 1962, out of use by 1989, but still not formally abolished in 2009. (2009 is the date of the SRS book that provided the information.)

There is a film on the SRS site about Minster and Deal boxes. I can’t do a link, but got to it through googling Deal signal box and it is under the SRS video pages. ( Deal & Minster - Signalling Record Society ). Deal comes in the second half and may explain a bit more.

I recall seeing Deal's down advanced starter from a passing train many years ago (when Betteshanger box was still in use), and I'm sure it was a 3-aspect. This would be the obvious choice for a colour-light combining the functions of Deal's advanced starter and Betteshanger's distant - it is the colour-light equivalent of a semaphore stop and distant arm on the same post. I'm pretty certain a similar arrangement used to exist north of Shepherdswell, with a 3-aspect colour-light acting as Shepherdswell's up advanced starter and Snowdown Colliery's up distant.

Yes, the video does show it as a three aspect. It was just that the SRS drawing showed it as a four.
