For those of you living on the island of Ireland or perhaps just visiting for a holiday, this Saturday (20 June) sees the commencement of the summer timetable at Downpatrick and County Down Railway.

Trains will run every Saturday and Sunday until 13 September, with one additional running day on the August bank holiday (31 August). The first train departs Downpatrick station at 14:00, then every 45 minutes until the final departure at 17:00.

As well as the railway itself, and the historic Inch Abbey, there is a museum and carriage gallery to have a look round. While steam will be the preferred traction, it is hoped to operate a number of diesel days too, details of which will be advised.

Tickets are £6 for adults, children £4.50 (free under 3), and £18 for a family of 2 adults and 2 children.

I won't add any links as I don't want to fall foul of board rules (I'm hoping I haven't already) but a quick Google search should reveal further information.

I visited this railway a couple of years back whilst on holiday in the area - friendly people and well worth a visit.

It sounds and looks fantastic. Also interesting is that prototype Pacer, RB3 is there.

Sadly it's not doing much at present however, it is stored within the carriage hall so is well protected. I think the last time it was started must be about 4 years ago. Unfortunately it's hard to devote attention to non-running stock as we are suffering a from a shortage of volunteers right now.
