Can anybody recommend a book that introduces digital control of a model railway layout to a complete novice please?

I can't recommend a book as such as I jumped in at the deep end, but I would say that if you can solder (basic 'sticking wires together' soldering rather than 'complicated brass kits in N gauge' soldering) and if you can wire an analogue (DC) model railway, you are halfway there.
For basic DCC set up and operation there is nothing complex to worry about, but many decisions that need to be made are personal preference, which controller, which decoders, etc.

Peco Publications, who publish 'Railway Modeller', have a 16 page booklet "Introducing DCC" - No. 17 in their 'Shows you how' series. This gives a very basic idea of DCC with useful definitions and a list of websites.
A more detailed book is "Aspects of Modelling - Digital Command Control" published by Ian Allan.
If you have a model railway shop reasonably close to you, you may find these and other books available there.
