I can't recommend a book as such as I jumped in at the deep end, but I would say that if you can solder (basic 'sticking wires together' soldering rather than 'complicated brass kits in N gauge' soldering) and if you can wire an analogue (DC) model railway, you are halfway there.
For basic DCC set up and operation there is nothing complex to worry about, but many decisions that need to be made are personal preference, which controller, which decoders, etc.
