DB Sparpreis

Can anyone tell me if I'm right in thinking that if I buy a DB Sparpreis ticket involving a connection from a regional onto an intercity train, the regional train has to be on the "booked" train as well as the intercity leg?

My recollection was that only the IC/ICE trains were fixed and you could use any regional train to make the connections at either end. DB's website seems to confirm this. See https://int.bahn.de/en/offers/saver-fare-flexible-fare/saver-fare ("Saver fare" is the English name for Sparpreis).

Which trains can I travel with?
If you have a saver fare ticket, you can only travel on the service indicated on the ticket. Offers are available for ICE/IC/EC connections within Germany. You can use local transport (e.g. RE, RB, IRE and S-Bahn or non-DB trains) to get to/from a long-distance station if you include them in your booking. You are not restricted to travelling on a specific train when using local rail services. However, your journey must be completed by 10:00 am the following day.

Exactly. IC ICE is fixed. Regional is flexible.

And, having bought the ticket, it very clearly states:
"Für Züge des Nahverkehrs (z.B. RE, RB, S) besteht keine Zugbindung."

which I am fairly sure means that there's no specific train requirement for regional trains.

The other clue of course is that only the intercity train is listed under "Zugbindung".

(For the record, thi sis actually a Sparpreis Europe and the FAQs for those don't seem to mention the rules on regional trains, but they are clearly the same).

Sparpreis Europa to where? Switzerland is a bit of an oddity as in Switzerland you are bound to RE ect as legally they dont have regional trains.

Oh the regional train is in Germany.

I wouldn't presume that the same rules apply to any regional connection outside Germany - if DB sells such tickets.
