Just received this in my inbox...Looks like the DB/DRS 37/4 Deal is off then...Unless DB are willing to sell to DRS Via tender...

These locomotives will be sold as seen and as and where lying. The successful bidders will be required to
remove the Locomotives from their present site at their own expense and without any assistance from DBSR.

Well from the TR UK issue which had a list of DBS 37's, they also had a report from DBS themselves which detailed whether they were able to easily be returned to service. Of the ones I can remember, 37042/521/669/670 were all healthy enough and from this list 37401/402/419/422/425 were all in reasonable internal nick. The others like 37411/416/417 at Eastleigh have been stored outside for 3 or 4 years and 37426 and 37427 haven't seen use for around 6 or 7 years although 426 has been stored inside as far as I know at Crewe and the same with 427. 37406 has given up various parts for other members of the class to be returned to service and I'm pretty sure 37405 had a power unit failure or something similar, and from the state its in at Toton, I would say its fit for the cutters torch unfortunately. Finally 37410 was moved to Marcroft for carriage heating duties for the WSMR fleet when they were overhauled and various rumours were around that it would be repaired there or at Crewe, but nothing happened and it hasn't worked a train in two or three years. If you wanted to return some of them to service straight away I think 37401 and 37425 would be the initial members to return to traffic as 37401 last moved around in June doing test runs in the Crewe area and 37425 was working in Scotland in the summer. Hope this helps.

This is really sad news imo as it'll probably mean that the majority of these locos will be scrapped.

I agree it is sad, I love 37's. I'm hopeful that DRS will acquire a couple of the serviceable ones like 401/422/425. Probably one will pass into preservation and maybe Harry Needle will buy one or two. Who knows. Its a shame none of us could get together to preserve one. ahh such is life eh.

Today observed 37 693 on the Alleys low-loader of doom A1(M) heading south towards M18 and Booth's no doubt. Not exactly EWS/DB but en-route to the scrappers all the same. Guess the world scrap price is getting higher & higher. RIP .... and the next is...?

37671 and 37891 have both also recently (or will shortly be) heading to Booths: Tbh, the Tyne Yard 37s didn’t stand a chance of being sold for anything other than scrap given that they’ve been rotting away for about a decade.

There’s a vague rumour on wnxx.com that DRS may have a hand in the purchase of at least some of the DB 37/4s. Certainly far from fact though.

I think 410 is in working order - i am sure i heard it fired up the last time i was up at Stoke (Britannia Stadium) - wonder if the wagon repair types have been keeping it ticking over every so often? Wonder if someone has thier eye on it?

If it wasnt a 37 starting up i dont know what the massive grumble/roar was!

PS Scrap price is through the roof so i imagine it will be VERY expensive to buy one of these locos!

For those planning to bid for preservation, this site http://www.metalprices.com/ may be useful as it will be possible to calculate roughly what the highest price a scrap merchant would bid for a given locomotive. The approximate tare weight of any locomotive is widely known, as is the metal it is made of.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of transporting and actually scrapping it, and allow for the dealer's margin.

Yes it is, it went to Marcroft for OTMR but never got it as DBS obviously changed there mind, therefore it became the resident shunter. It used to move the W&S coaches around quite a bit when they were there.
