DB- Reservations

I have booked tickets from Hannover Hbf to Wernigerode on a RE service but, I am unable to reserve seats . Is this normal and will we have differculty finding seats ?
This will be my first trip to Germany and I am looking forward to visiting the Harz Railway . Any info appreciated .

RE trains don't have reservations. As you're heading into east germany I doubt the train will be that busy although it will probably be a DMU with not that many coaches. The Harz railway is great, make sure you go up the Brocken

Hannover to Wernigerode (Halle) RE services are worked by these things ; can get quite busy but finding a seat is not usually a problem - look out for the signal gantry in the picture at Bad Harzburg shown in the photo.

Can I recommend getting the 3 or 5 Day card for 42 or 47 Euro, go anywhere on the Harz system with as many trips up the Brocken as you like - some of the other "rover" tickets restrict you to one trip up the Brocken. BTW the climb from Eisfelder Tahlmuhle to Benneckenstein is just as good as the Brocken, also good fun between Gernrode and Magdesprung on the Selketalbahn in both directions.

Agree with 33056- the few times i've taken these trains (midday ish out of Hannover a couple of years back) they were wedged and standing as far as Hildesheim- be at the platform early and try to bag a seat at the front- you can watch the line with the driver!

Also I believe the shorter runs from Hannover as far as Bad Harzburg are still 218 + fresh air single deck stock- maybe worth a split of journey?

Yes they are, but the problem in taking those is that there is no connection at Bad Harzburg to and from Wernigerode - you spend around an hour at Bad Harzburg in both directions waiting for the 612 on the RE to catch you up.
