Most of the 103s only managed 25 - 30 years in service, which is roughly what most of the 101s should manage. As DanielB says, the class have been worked hard. It's a similar story with the 373s and some older generation TGVs.

Indeed and the 103s only really got that final life extension due to the grounding of the ICE sets after the crash.

Ironically, those same ICE sets will be heading towards their 40th birthdays by the time they are withdrawn. Probably worked even harder than the 101s, that will be quite some achievement and some seriously impressive mileages racked up.

Imagine if the 101s had been locomotives in the UK - the Speculative Ideas subforum would be awash with fury!
Can 101s couple to 442s? Could they supply hotel power at the right voltage?

That's a shame the old loco hauled trains are being retired, happy memories of the meander down the Rhine on them.
Still, the ICE trains are fantastic replacements - although I struggle to tell the types apart - I really like ones on the "roller-coaster" between Frankfurt Airport and Cologne.

Not even that complicated to distinguish them: ICE-1 has an engine car at both ends, ICE-2 has the engine car at one end (and a driving trailer with passenger space on the other side). ICE-3 and 4 both do not have a car completely filled with engines but are easily distinguished by the rounded windshield of an ICE-3 cab vs. the pretty square one of an ICE-4 cab.

Hard to say which ones you really like: a quick look learned me that trains between Frankfurt Airport and Cologne are operated by ICE-1, -3 and -4. And if the train failed somewhere halfway it probably has been an ICE-3M ;) (the multi-voltage version used for international ICE services)

If it was on the Frankfurt - Cologne high speed line, it would definitely have been an ICE-3, as the ICE-1s and 4s aren't allowed to run on it.

I suppose you mean ICE-1 and -2 are not allowed there? As I'm getting ICE-4 operated trains out of the DB journey planner with travel times very similar to ICE-3 operated trains, so they apparently take the same route.

Depends on the line however, how the experience will be with a loco hauled train compared to an ICE set. When you're on an high speed line the difference is actually hardly noticeable in my experience, the charm of a loco hauled train comes somewhat from the scenery you're travelling trough as well.
Makes me curious to the future ECx experience as its replacement, meandering through the Dutch countryside on its way from Amsterdam to Berlin.

Ah sorry, you're probably right there. 1s and 2s (and loco-hauled trains) aren't allowed on it due to not having distributed traction equipment.

I rarely go and look at both ends to be honest, and just get on! But thanks for the tip

It was indeed - thanks.

Can also tell 1 and 2 apart by position of headlights, and couplings. ICE 2 has a coupler hatch similar to (say) a 395, whereas the ICE 1 is a bit more fixed. That's my go-to method anyway.

so what routes will the ICE-1/2 be cascaded to....... Looks like
InterCity Nowadays=InterRegio in the past while
ICE nowadays=IC in the past.
Wait! I wondered if some ICE-T will be displaced too to replace IC1 sets?

ICE T seem to be fixed in certain routes even if tilt is not used.
101s seem pretty run down with services often run in three motors only.
As to the selling of stock. DB is now actively advertisung the sale of train..
This is a train by dbgebrauchtzug.de . Lease or buy me.

ICE-T will be probably concentrated to routes that Tilt is useful.........

In addition there is also the DB habit of scrapping vehicles rather than risk them being used by a competitor.
maybe RailAdventure need the locomotives

Ah, that's a shame, though I can why they're doing it. It'll certainly be interesting to see if they're picked up by another operator.

For certainty - for when is the next Fahrplanwechsel scheduled?

The MET sets were great, apart from the second class seating and lack of catering, but the business and first class seating was wunderbar

Maybe Regiojet will
I think it's unlikely that any of the low-price operators will be interested in a small number of luxury coaches that are about to be due a major inspection. I'd be looking more at heritage and charter groups, and even then they'll be sensitive about the price.

I had to translate that, could you in future stick to English? It does matter for accuracy and understanding. Thanks
With respect, it's the correct and accurate word in German for an event being discussed in a thread about operations in Germany. Nevertheless I take your point.

At least, in this instance, the German compound word can be translated word-for-word. Not even the word order needs to change!

The Class 120s were withdrawn last year is it due to replacement by ICE-4 and IC2?
And anyone have ideas when will the 111/112/114/143s be withdrawn and what will replace the 111/112/114/143s?

All four of those classes have been in gradual decline over the last 5-10 years, mostly replaced by a variety of modern EMUs. I couldn't tell you when the last of each will be withdrawn though.
