Day trips from Malaga by Rail

I'm off to Feungirola on the train on Friday and was just wondering if there are any day trips I could do from there by rail. I know the line from Fuengirola into Malaga has an intensive service but how about to other parts like Grenada, Ronda or Gibraltar? Can anybody help?

I will be travelling with a FIP card so preferably services that are free!

Seville is a must by train from Malaga. It's a long journey, but the scenery is spectacular. There is usually a morning train there and an evening one back. Last time I went (2002) it was around 30 Euros for the return ticket. Well worth it though, and you'll have about 4 hours or so to explore Seville.

You can now take the AVANT high speed train from Malaga to Sevilla/Seville using high speed line throughout via Cordoba. Journey 1 hr 55 mins. Theres are trains from Malaga at 09:10 and 14:30. Return from Sevilla at 17:55 and 19:35. The one way fare bought at the station is approx €35.

You could go one way on the AVANT high speed train and the other way on the regular regional train, which has a slower journey time of 2h 30 mins. Though you do get to see the gorge between Malaga and Bobidilla. For this train, expect to pay €20 at the station.

Thanks both. Will certainly look at going there for the day. A trip down the gorge at El Chorro would be nice too so may do the outward on the fast and return by slow train as you suggest. I was having a bit of trouble with the RENFE website - it was only showing direct trains to places and made out that journeys with at least one change weren't possible!

www.bahn.de will be able to offer journeys with changes. If you do change trains, you may well end up changing at Bobadilla or Cordoba.

Yeah the line has stunning scenary. The trains are like Voyagers tho. DMUS. The high speed line was under construction the last time i went in 2007 .

I only work on 158s so any type of train is different and a welcome change to me!

I went there for a day trip a couple of years ago and visited Alora which is a delightful sleepy hilltop town at the end of Line C2, with an excellent if half empty bar on the station platform. We went Airport - Malaga Alameda Central, on C1 then Alora and back to Malaga on C2, got back to Malaga at around 4ish, then C1 to Fuengirola and had a look round there, then Benalmedina where we had a meal before catching a train back to thye airport at about 9 for the 11.30 flight back to Luton. My recollection is that you could get a low priced day rover type ticket covering the Malaga lines C1 and C2. Good day out and great to get a day of 17 degree sunshine in the middle of an English winter.
