I live in Newcastle at the moment and since the release of the ORR stats for this year I have been wondering about paying a visit to Redcar British Steel station, but I'm unsure how open to the public this station is.

I did find an old post here from a fella who sent an enquiry to SSI Steel who own all the land surrounding the station, but by my understanding the company has since gone into liquidation. If the site is actually empty, I would imagine a security contractor has responsibility for controlling it just as they would for any other abandoned site or building, but I'm unsure how to proceed. Thinking about just turning up because the worst that can happen is I get kicked out the site.

I would be interested in getting the early morning train with my pal, taking a few pictures of the station and surrounding area and then walking back together to central Redcar to get a train home.

Has anyone paid a visit to the station in recent years? Any information at all that could be of use?

First post on the site so excuse any errors please :D

The station is situated in private lands, so you would have to gain permission in order to leave the station and walk to central Redcar. The way the trains are spaced (07:57, 08:24, 16:58, 18:17) makes arriving and departing by trains possible and desirable. I would suggest that you arrive and depart by train. If you stay on the platforms and associated station infrastructure, that is Network Rail property so you are allowed to be there.

I didn't last year, it's easiest to walk out of the site than to walk onto the site (the security guard was in a little portacabin watching the football, the walk back to Central Redcar is easy enough and is along pavemented roads) However I seem to recall in a recent Branch Line Newsletter a new fence has popped up across the main path from the station towards the main entrance so unless you go climbing you won't be able to leave.

I would probably leave it until the nights get lighter, or do it with the morning service (05:26 Newcastle - Darlington, then 06:14 to Saltburn (or 06:34 changing at Middlesborough for a Saltburn service), going to Saltburn returning to British Steel Redcar for the 35 minutes before the next service arrives. I dare say 15 minutes is probably all you need)
