Day Trip to Crewe

Me and a few friends are thinking of undertaking a trip to Crewe in a few weeks, what can we expect from both traction and station amenities?

We're starting in Birmingham but is there anywhere else thats easily reachable that'll give a good day out?

Both Stafford and Tamworth are good for traction and freight stuff as well as high speed Pendo's, especially at Tamworth.

Regarding Crewe, a similar question was asked last night on the "Alterations, Diagrams and Timetables" Board. If you refer to that I have posted some info re traction at Crewe

Crewe station is ok with ok amenities. Gets bloody cold sometimes. In terms of traction you see the following: 390,221,150,153,158,350,175,323 and 156's are appearing quite often. You might also see a 220 or the sleeper stock. Freight-wise I'm unsure.

Most of the freight at Crewe uses the Station avoiding lines (Independent lines), so not a great amount through the station I believe.

Not been to Crewe for ages except when changing trains. However during the day there used to be activity with DRS 37's shuttling in and out of the station from the diesel depot.

Others may have better info than me though.

Keep an eye on the bay platforms - the southern-end ones sometimes see freightliner/drs loco movements in and out of them, while the northern end bay platform sometimes get 67s/90s/92s in and out. Not promising anything, but it's always a highlight.

Also, there should be the thunderbird 57 sat next to Platform 12, northern end of the station. Have fun!

No point staying on the station - overnight - methinks the all night buffet on platforms 6 - 11 ceased to be so at least thirteen years back !
Stafford be a better place to view the trains - particularly freight - no 'independent' lines !
