Day trip including Waterloo and Brockenhurst

I'm planning to travel from Basingstoke to Waterloo on Friday, late morning. Then I want to catch the 14.35 to Brockenhurst to get me there as close to 16.00 as possible to meet a friend. Then later the same day I want to return to Basingstoke.

I'm aware that the 14.35 doesn't stop at Basingstoke (I've cursed that many times!) so I can't just get two day returns starting from there. Can anyone advise what the cheapest tickets option is that allows me to use that 14.35 train?

You could simply get a return Winchester-Waterloo and a return Basingstoke-Brockenhurst, which will cost a bit more, but you can then use the train you want. However I haven’t looked into how much more.

£50.60 for an off-peak return (feels strange that there's no Winchester to Waterloo off-peak day return) and £28.90 for a Basingstoke to Brockenhurst anytime day return, or £79.50 in total. £33.65 + £19.20 = £52.85, or £26.65 less with a Network Railcard (if late morning = after 10:00*), so if OP doesn't already have a railcard it might be worth getting that one.

*I don't know if that means leaving Basingstoke after 10:00 or on a service which leaves Winchester after 10:00 in the case of services going via Southampton.

So the 14:35 skips Basingstoke between Woking and Winchester.

Overlapping Winchester-Basingstoke as proposed above, I can find:
Winchester - London Terminals Off-Peak Return £50.60 [essentially not valid to arrive London Terminals before 10am]
Basingstoke - Brockenhurst Evening Out Return £23.00 [valid after 12pm]
Total: £73.60

However, overlapping Basingstoke-Woking instead seems to be slightly cheaper:
Off-Peak Day Return Basingstoke - London Terminals via Woking £32.60 (or Any Permitted £34.70) [essentially not valid to arrive London Terminals before 10am]
Super Off-Peak Return Woking - Brockenhurst £33.50 [valid after 12pm]
Total: £66.10

A railcard will be able to discount at least the second return ticket, if not both.
