Worth looking at split ticketing to Bristol maybe? Going to be challenging to get too far from 3rd rail land with £25!

Make a journey to Westbury then onwards to Taunton or similar? Maybe change for the Exeter direction at Salisbury? Possible that it could be affordable to change at Axminster for a bus link to Lyme Regis or Seaton?

How about doing a round trip to the northern end of the Thameslink network with a day return to Lidlington, as I believe a Brighton - Lidlington ticket is valid both via Bletchley & Bedford
So you could do something like: Brighton - Victoria (on the Gat Express) - Euston - Bletchley - Bedford - St Pancras [via EMT] - Brighton

Most of that is on commuter territory, which is what I was looking to avoid for the OP.
My only other sensible choice with the money restrictions would be Reading. Possibly Oxford at a push.

I was thinking slightly different to the usual 3rd rail, with some OHLE thrown in to Bletchley, some sprinter thrash to Bedford before an intercity DEMU back to St Pancras.
Brighton towards Southampton is just so slow

If I may use this post as a jumping-off point to hijack this thread...what kind of prices can you get through that? I'm in Worthing rather than Brighton (should knock the price down in comparison) but I've been looking at Bath/Bristol for a trip for a while - the straight fares are a bit silly though - you'd think they were via London
. Is it cheaper via Reading & the North Downs?unsplit Worthing-Bristol Advances seem to start from around £14 one-way before any railcard discounts. (I was looking at midweek journeys in August.)
Splitting at Salisbury might help if you were looking at flexible tickets and had a network railcard (because the Salisbury-Bristol leg is outwith the network railcard area). transplit.com suggests splitting flexible offpeak tickets at Salisbury and Warminster (£35.80 with network railcard discount).

Thank you - I should add that I have a 16-25 railcard - & that I'd rather not do advances because Great British Weather & I like being able to break journey. I don't know anything about the network railcard - is the discount different?
They give the same 34% discount, but the 16-25 railcard would discount the whole Worthing-Bristol journey (and not just the part of the journey in the network railcard area). And if you travel in July or August you are not hit by the £12 minimum fare before 10am. With flexible tickets, and splits at Salisbury and Warminster, and a 16-25 railcard, trainsplit.com suggests a cost of £29.40 for journeys leaving Worthing after 9am on a weekday in July or August (or after 10am on any other weekday or anytime at weekends).

What about a Southern Daysave ticket?
You could get some lines that aren't 3rd rail commuter stuff with an itinerary like:
Brighton - Hastings - Ashford
Ashford - Hastings - Lewes
729 bus to Uckfield
Uckfield - East Croydon
Easy Croydon - Brighton
That'll give you a lot of Turbostar mileage through what's not perhaps the usual commuter routes.
Another alternative if you aren't in any rush, don't mind a late return and you can stick with advance ticket restriction is that there are some very cheap Brighton - Liverpool advance tickets.
The cheapest are the Southern & London Midland tickets and they are £7.90 each way with your railcard discount.
My final suggestion:
Aim for Exeter.
Do this by getting advances for Brighton to London and back - £3.30 each way (inc railcard discount)
The get a Megabus train ticket from London Waterloo to Exeter - £12 out, £8 back.
That's £1.60 over your budget and a late night home.
