Dawlish sea wall collapse

Cockermouth was built a million pound flood defense barrier after its floods in 2009 and so far hasn't flooded again to the same extent. That's probably 'highly unlikely' to happen again but it didn't stop them spending.
The point is that local businesses need to have some assurance it won't happen again and the best way is protection. You can't predict it won't happen again in the near future, neither can I say it will happen again. Spending money in the short-term for the benefit of the long-term is surely better for all concerned, despite one person on here saying it'll neither be 'just' nor 'fair'.

Well given HSTEd wants to spend the money on a Severn Barrage from Ifracombe to the Gower with a chemical works in the centre to use the power without having to transmit it anywhere I'm sure Dawlish isn't that much of a ludicrous project.

Maybe a diversion is worth considering. I'm sure the EU would contribute given Cornwall has/had Objective One. In Switzerland they've built substantial bypasses on branch lines just to enable level crossings to be closed. The existing line can be kept for local services (my boss suggested using kettles in the summer to milk the tourists!)

Lots of work going on the camera. Not sure what though, looks like more shoring up the temporary wall to ensure it doesn't happen again. Expecting rebuilding work to start by end of week apparently.

Anyone local to the area report what work is going on on the other less damaged sections?

Anyone local to the area report what work is going on on the other less damaged sections?

From what I have heard it's not possible to get anywhere near most of the damage due to the security now in place, that's unless you have a boat...

Yes one of the breaches in the wall is between the station and Coryton Tunnel. The afternoon after it happened you could see the track suspended above the ballast at very close quarters from Marine Parade, what you can see now I've no idea. But the damage there is to the wall itself which you can only see from the beach, or from a distance on Teignmouth Hill where I'm told the footpath to Coryton Cove is still accessible. I haven't been there myself since that afternoon.

One has to remember that the 2009 flood at Cockermouth was not only caused by the effects of heavy rainfall but also by the fact that the river channels had never had regular dredging which resulted in the gradual build up of gravel build up over the preceding years that had been water-carried from the upland areas by the river.

I've proposed one before. It's not physically impossible - go via Iceland so you're not submerged when crossing the mid-Atlantic ridge. Anyone got a spare trillion quid?

Maybe enabling works for this are being incorporated now as NR are saying a mid April completion date :roll:

So if I had a contract to do building works on your property and I suddenly said I need about another 4 weeks you would have absolutely no problem .issue or complaint whatsoever ? If so you have my total respect

I only know what most others do by watching the news but I was wondering why they can't increase the manpower there to take account of the additional work required after last Friday nights storms especially when you consider Mr Cameron's big fanfare statement of funding being no object

They cant make concrete and mortar dry any quicker. They have not anywhere said Mid April. They are still considering their position. Also when 12 hours a day you cannot do any work you are losing mobilisation time etc and you are really struggling.

If i was doing building for you and you expected a hurricane catagory 2 storm to not impact the timescale i would tell you to shove it.

We will be working round the clock with dedicated resources day and night to accelerate the programe of repairs, and anticipate the railway will be restored by mid-April 2014.

If since the date was agreed the sea had entered my property and smashed a lot of it to bits...yes

Thanks for explaining things a bit about construction techniques, however Network Rail have said just a short time ago on BBC radio 5 live that it is anticipated a mid April re opening so you are wrong on that one

A Network Rail spokesmean in London speaking on my local ITV Westcountry news tonight simply said they will TRY their best to reopen the Dawlish line by mid April but warned that timeline was at the mercy of the weather.

Are the rail replacement buses really awful or is it that people just don't like travelling on buses. I try to avoid the replacement buses because they are usually slower.
