You are correct. It doesn't really matter who is in charge. There is very little real difference between the main parties, and in any case, with the EU and globalisation we are affected a lot more by world events and the world economy than we used to be.

We can never know, of course, but if the Tories or Lib Dems had been in power during the banking crisis, I am pretty sure they would have bailed the banks out too. They would have been just as fearful of the consequences of not doing it.

Those who have pointed out that it wasn't just the banks who over extended themselves ar ealso right. This is the nature of capitalism, from the south sea bubble onwards. Most people thought that property was the way to riches. They borrowed money on the basis that the value of their homes and property investments would continue to rise, and rise at the same rates as the early 2000's. The inevitable bursting of the housing bubble when things went too far caused all the trouble, but people never seem to elarn the lessons from history.

on the subject of the good Mr. Cameron, I happened across this, from our friends at Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia:

The word "Tory" derives from the Middle Irish word tóraidhe; modern Irish tóraí: outlaw, robber or brigand, from the Irish word tóir, meaning "pursuit", since outlaws were "pursued men". It was originally used to refer to an Irish outlaw and later applied to Confederates or Royalists in arms. The term was thus originally a term of abuse, "an Irish rebel", before being adopted as a political label in the same way as Whig.

The question here is why did some people think that house prices were going to rise forever?

perhaps because that's what the entire system of the Capitalist economy is based on; the idea of continuous growth. The more I see, the more I think that Marx was right (in identifying the problems, at least, if not in the historical inevitability of the proletarian revolution).

Why did people think share prices would rise forever?

Actually, it's probably fair to say that they will rise long term, it's just that people expected a similar rate of increase short term, with little expectation of falls or blips in the short or medium term.

I tend to agree. Unfortunately, in the world of media control by the likes of Murdoch, it's unlikely that the thoughts or writings of Karl Marx will get a fair airing.

As I see it, a big problem is that communism doesn't work, capitalism doesn't seem to work either - what do you do?!

I've tried not to be amused over this farce with the Euro, but I just can't help laugh at the idea that a bunch of Politicians think they can get round a table and save the world (sorry Gordon!). All they are doing is postponing the inevitable! We're supposed to look to Politicians for leadership - I have to say I've seen precious little from the key players this week, be it the big players in Europe to our own Cameron.

And then, when you look to the alternative, you see Miliband making a complete fool of himself over Sarkozy's rant and then compounding his faux pas by suggesting that Britain could still join the Euro if he was PM for long enough. Does the guy have a brain?!

I hate to say it, but although I fear Cameron is just another Blair, he is the best of a bad bunch right now. David Miliband, where are you?!
