I think you'll find it was simply because he didn't believe in the honours system

But he did receive an Honour from the French, the "Ordre des Arts et des Lettres". Wikipedia then goes on to say that he rejected the British honours because "I would never have any intention of accepting anything like that. I seriously don't know what it's for. It's not what I spent my life working for."

Sadly, he went to his final resting place with that lifetime's ambition unfulfilled.
