Data on ticket sales between certain stations/clusters

Is data on ticket sales between specific stations/clusters of stations available? For example, if I wanted to know the number of tickets sold between Derby and Exeter would that be available?

Is it the sort of thing that an FoI to the Dept. for Transport would be appropriate for?

Similarly, although this really is a long shot, is there any similar data on long distance coach and air passenger numbers?

Short answer is no. Any FOI request would be rejected on the grounds of commercial confidentiality.

There is some very high level data on the ORR site, for example in 2013-14 there were 346000 journeys from the East Midlands to the South West, but you won't get anything more specific than that.

I would put in a FOI request, the reason why the data is not made available does not stack up. You will be turned down but I would then appeal against it.

Many years ago I put in a FOI for station usage data to ORR - it led to the annual publication of that data.

I also put in a FOI for passenger flows on key routes to ORR and was provided with it.

In more recent years they have claimed confidentiality and that it is not their data. Due to my job I am unable to pursue this matter now.

However, the lack of transparency with such data makes it hard for outsiders to fully understand franchises and their potential while all the incumbents effectively have access to it.
