My nephew would be very grateful for any assistance with respect to the questions below, in particular the one about the most common lost items. Can anyone on here please help? If easier feel free to PM me. TIA.

He has asked me to post the following:

I am doing GCSE Product Design and for our coursework we are exploring how items can be protected while travelling.
With this in mind I was wondering if you would be willing to help me by answering a few questions:
- What does the railway industry do to protect personal possessions?
- What design features do the trains have that protect baggage?
- What are the most common items that get lost or damaged?
- What issues result from damage or loss of personal possessions?
- How is the railway industry evolving in helping passengers to protect their personal possessions?
Thank you very much,

Most lost property services are outsourced. "MissingX" is a major provider of software for this, across all transport modes, not just rail. This element is, I suppose, one of the things the rail companies do once you have lost your possessions, to try and make it possible to find it and get it back.

As for design features, I suspect it's mainly as a positive side effect from safety and security, so constant reminders in the form of posters and announcements to keep luggage with you at all times, take everything with you when leaving the train etc etc.

I suspect the items most frequently lost (but not scientific at all!):

Bags, umbrellas, tickets/pass holders or wallets, hats and gloves, mobile phones, headphones, jewellery.
