Dark Cabin?

Is anyone else annoyed that in the modern planes the cabin never goes fully dark for takeoff and landing. Even worse, the light is where I don't want it, over the windows.

I used to love the clear city views when landing at night.

I believe it is a safety issue (for approach and landing) tied in with requiring open window blinds in the descent Etc.

It varies a lot depending on the airline's policy and how the crew interpret and apply that.

I've had some flights recently with Lufthansa group airlines where the lights were turned off completely, except for some very dim 'mood lights' on the overhead lockers.

But with most other airlines it seems to just be the case that the lights are dimmed, making it impossible to get pictures without reflections.

It is certainly the case with the US airlines that I fly. Delta, American and United.

Ryanair are certainly dimming the lights on takeoff and landing. I've actually had a nice flight recently where they dimmed the lights after 11pm for a 1am arrival, which was an unexpected and nice surprise.

TUI generally turn the lights right down apart from a blue strip for night time take off and landing and after the trolley service turn them right down at night until just before landing, to tidy everything and do checks then turn them down again.

I am sure coming out of Charles de Gaulle in November easyJet turned the lights right off as I managed to get a photo with no glare of Paris lit up and you can see the Eiffel Tower.

No not remotely annoyed but it's absolutely fine by me that you are. We're all different and that's what makes us all the same.

More bothered about Dreamliner windows being forced to dark and locked by the crew on daytime long hauls. Being put to bed so they get an easy flight!
