Perhaps it's my due to my great age, but I seem to remeber that when the Dargan bridge was built, it had the facility to be fitted with catenary, should electrification ever be approved. Am I right in this?

Thanks.

You are. While it was being constructed the IRRS had a rail and bus tour to view the construction works (this including be taken into Central Service Depot in 99-773-749) At the time electrification of NIR Suburban was being talked about and I asked one of the project engineers if the footbridge at Yorkgate was high enough for overhead wires and was told it was as the construction was with electrification in mind

I think many new rail projects (even replacement overbridges) allow for potential future OHLE.

Did I hear as well that it is possible to dual the viaduct? Expensive but possible?

The fact that the viaduct wasn't dualled in the first place maybe shows the then thinking behind rail services. The effect is obviously a limit on train frequency but it's actually quite surprising that any thought was given to OHLE at all in light of the decision not to dual the track.

As far as I recall, the then DOE baulked at a double track line, believing that a single line viaduct would be cheaper, cos it only had one line.

If they had brains they would've been dangerous!!
