The general Smart Motorways thread appears to have been closed, so this can have another one.
This weekend I witnessed the most potentially dangerous thing I've ever seen on a smart motorway, and one that really makes me question the design of the variable speed limit part (which I generally support).
4 lane motorway, at a junction with two turnoffs, one in advance and one near the junction, somewhere on the M1 or M6 (I forget exactly where).
There was a broken down vehicle partly but not completely blocking the left lane of the slip after both turnoffs.
Main 4 lanes had 40 up, fair enough.
Turnoff had 20 and then a red X with little warning before the second turnoff came in, making getting over hazardous without breaking the speed limit, though many chose to breach the red X and pass the stranded vehicle slowly as the least dangerous option.
I assume someone must have set that manually, but I'm astonished it didn't cause an accident. Absolutely insane. Having a red X then making escaping it very difficult is so dangerous. If 20 is needed to be safe, it needs to ALL be 20.
