My OH accidentally threw away the return half of his ticket, and it got stained on the back from a tea bag. I retrieved the ticket when we realised, and tried to wipe the tea stain off, but I'm now worried in case I invalidated the black strip along the back of the ticket which I believe might be the bit that contains the info that allows you through barriers. I rubbed it quite hard and a small area of the paper got "scuffed up".

Will we be okay using this ticket or will the possibly corrupted strip cause a problem? All the details on the front are fine, not damaged and clearly readable.

If it's still legible and doesn't seem to have been tampered with - then I can't see the problem. If it's a huge problem, try asking a ticket office to reprint it. Just use manual barriers if there's a problem

Really?! Wasn't aware of that, it's free on LU!
I think you'll find it was a joke about the over-the-top fees charged by the railways for various services ;)

It'll probably be ok, I've been given tickets that look like they have been chewed, spat out, buried in a peat bog for three weeks and then recycled.

It's only when they have a suspicious looking tear around where a clip/stamp might have been that I say no.

I'm very careful how I tear tickets now, after seeing them re-presented having been screwed up, and told "It's been in my back pocket all day"

If it's a single being kept by a customer as a receipt, a tear in the mag strip at both ends to make it obvious it's not an accident, and if it's a used travelcard etc which I'm binning to stop someone pick it up, I rip it up totally now.
