The video was taken from an OHL test train.

Just at the start you can see the pantograph strikes the inclined cantilever bracket which has become detached from the Structure as is hanging in the pantograph sweep area.

The train was of course stopped relatively quickly.

One day during the 1970s when the GN Electrification was being proved, a design fault led to a dewirement at Langley Jct. UNfortunately the camera was not running at the time.

Legend has it that when the OHL was reinstated, the OHL Engineer at the Board instructed a fresh run on the same route, this time with the cameras running !

Again there was a dewirement but it was all captured on camera and led to an understanding of the mechanism of dewirement.

As far as I know the Pantograph loosing power or coming down will not apply brakes. There will be an addition to the Rule Book, (is it December?) allowing trains to coast (with panto down) under the obstruction.

I don't know if the pantograph is damaged whether this will stop the train?

THe head of the pantograph is fitted with small strips of carbon which are attached to a special u-channel frame. The carbon strips cover small holes within the U-channle which is filled with high pressure air.

In the event of damage to the carbons, the air holes will be uncovered leading to the pantograph being rammed down into the pantograph well by a vacuum operated piston attached to the knuckle of the pantograph arm.

There is no application of the brakes because it is not necessary to include the pantograph in the braking circuit.

Damage to the pantograph should result (but not always) in the loss of the Line light as the pantograph is dropped.

Where the pantograph is located towards the front of the train, such as on a loco, movement within the OHL (sometimes violent) will give an indication of OHL damage being caused.

Control of the train rests with the Driver who should try to coast to as good a location as possible unless damage to the OHL is suspected when the pan down button should be operated as a matter of course and the train stopped in emergency.

Years back we would get an ADD(Automatic Dropping Device) operation maybe one or twice week at most.

Generally ADDs do not cause but can be the result of pantograph or OHL damage, some of which may be catastrophic, and others less so.

Am I right in thinking the OHL zig zags to prevent the pantograph from being worn down in one spot?

Don't forget, not all pantogaphs are ADD fitted. A number of Stone Faiveleys aren't ADD fitted, instead they have a fibreglass strip beneath the level of the pan head, should the carbons disintegrate then this will take the uplift until the train can be brought to a halt.

The ADD operation isn't quite as described. In the case of a Brecknell Willis the pan lowers at pretty much the same rate except for those that operate over 110mph where the pan head moves away from the contact wire rapidly to start with, an then lowers normally. A Stone Faiveley is a little more violent, the air engine pulls the pan back down.

The OHL Contact wire is staggered by up to about 350mm from centre along the track, between two Structures with a possiible 0mm stagger at the mid-way point.

The actual stagger figures are much less on tangent track but are still sufficient to sweep the top of the pantograph carbons from side to side.

Here is a photograph of the Contact wire at its maximum stagger.

If the problem was to happen to a pendo, would it not be able to coast for a while then use the second pantograph that is within the set?

It depends on what the fault actually is. If the driver recieves an ADD activation he is requied to bring the train to a stand as soon as possible as an ADD activation can indicate damage with the OHLE. Obviously the further the train travels the more potential damage can be done.

If its just a lose of line light then yes, the train is permitted to coast to a more suitable location if possible.

Just to point out that both videos appear to be taken in Germany, the second one has the line number (4010) at the top of the display which is the Riedbahn between Frankfurt (Main) and Mannheim.
