Hello all. I am booked on the Chester-Carlisle Dalesman next Tuesday. The times sent by WCRC are earlier than those on Realtime trains and there's nothing showing on UK steam info (at the time of writing this) I'm sure I saw somewhere that one of them went direct over shap too. Also one week it was 37s the next 47s. So, my questions are, Is it booked 37,47 or whatever they feel like on the day? Any idea why the mis-match in timings? and North direct or S and C? Either way I will know for certain by Tuesday dinner! Just curious. Thanks.

It was originally advertised as outward via Shap and the first train of the programme did run that way but since then it's both ways S&C.
As to the diesels, someone may know a day or two before the train runs and I'd suggest checking the Railtours board on WNXX if it really matters.

Thanks. Not to fussed really. Am mostly curious about the timing changes. Would prefer 37s but it won't alter my plans if it's 47s.

The timing mismatch will likely simply be because they've advertised it before they'be even bid for it, a common occurrence given lead times, but it can cause issues when they advertise timings too. Given the differences in route I expect there's been some 'negotiation' between WCRC and NR over what WCRC wants, and what's actually possible, while being practical for both. A frequent thing is for NR offer a set of timings to the charter operator, only for them to say it's either a too early start, too late a finish, or there's not enough time at the intended destination, so that tends to lead to a change in the itinerary.

When I was timing these a few years ago it wasn't unusual for the bid to be so bad that it wouldn't have been possible to keep to the advertised times even had we been able to remove every other train from the network! I even dealt with one that expected a train to reverse on a stretch of double track plain line!

I like the story, I bet you have quite a few. The train has run twce already so I just assumed the times were pinned down.
