We saw the deltic yesterday at whitby

Only seemed to be on one engine is that because the other is broken or that it does not need the power ?

They're normally run on one engine to conserve engine hours - unless both are needed to pull whatever it's pulling.

Both engines were running on shed on Thursday, so both work. The Warship and Western are also running on one engine, for the same reasons of hours and fuel consumption.

It had both going for its Battersby trip that got aborted just after Egton.

Aborted because some idiot hit one of the road bridges with his road vehicle and Network Rail had to close the line as the bridge was too badly damaged.

The second Deltic powerunit doesn't start revving up from idle until around 20 MPH to produce power. Does depend on other things too like throttle position needs to be at least 3/4. So running on a preserved line with a speed limit of 25 MPH means most of the time the second engine does nothing. Waste of engine hours/fuel/oil.

I had planned that the only twin engine working for the whole weekend in one direction would be from Whitby to Battersby but we didn't get that far !! The line was reopened on Sunday with a 5MPH limit on the bridge.

We did later on in the day do a Whitby - Grosmont but with line speeds slow on that section its really pointless.
