Hi All

According to a post on the 'wnxx forum', D1015 has 'thrown a leg out of bed' and has been withdrawn from use with immediate effect. Hopefully the damage isn't too severe, and she will be flying along the main line again soon!

Surely anything other than severe damage is unlikely?
My understanding of 'a leg out of bed' is that there is usually a hole in the crank case caused by the pistion shooting through it...in which case, that's a major job, right? Please do correct me if that's wrong though .

Statement on the DTG website

Unfortunately after completing it's 50th mainline tour D1015 suffered an engine failure on the ECS working back to Eastleigh. The result is that the loco is out of traffic with immediate effect and is likely to remain so for the foreseeable future. It is with regret therefore that any further planned railtour commitments in 2010 cannot met. We will try and keep you up to date with further developments and hope that D1015 can be returned to traffic as soon as possible.

I heard D1015 making a very good 'roar' as it made its way south on Saturday afternoon, although it was running almost an hour late.

Does anyone know what was wrong with it at Carlisle before it headed towards Appleby? I heard something about it losing power, or a problem along those lines.

What time did it arrive into Westbury?

Very sad news, glad I got to see 1015 on the mainline before this happened. Hopefully she'll be running again in due course.

Near enough - it refers to a connecting rod letting go of the crankshaft, and exiting the engine. A major failure indeed.

The Deltics were well known for doing this weren't they?

But it can happen to anything - even the QE2 did this once!

Deposited the stock in Upperby yard and toodled off to get some fuel.

Wasn't far off right time into Westbury.

I still have not seen this loco. Not ever. couple yrs back, I missed it at Whitland when the railtour to Milford Haven actually ran 30min early, not late. my hopes are dashed again, as it was due down for the Western Wales Explorer on Sep 18th

You could do worse than look in their Sales section - and don't forget to follow their suggestion to 'Buy at Western Champion' before using Amazon, eBay and so on, it all adds up. I was due to order stuff after payday, and will be doing so tonight.
The DTG are a nice bunch to travel with and are a genuinely friendly organisation, which makes it so easy to give them money
The more of us that do, the more chance there is of the big beastie being out on the mainline next year.

D1015 Western Champion should shortly be returning to mainline service, following major work to repair and replace the 'B' engine that went pop on an ECS move in August 2010.

The first revenue earning mainline service is scheduled to be on a Vintage Trains railtour from Tyseley to Plymouth, with D1015 hauling the legs to and from Bristol Temple Meads, where a couple of kettles will take over.

I'm booked on this railtour as a 40th birthday present and it wasn't until I got the heads up that I knew of the inclusion of this venerable 'Wizzo' for part of the journey.

Really looking forward to it. One of my earliest memories as a child was seeing a 'Western' at Taunton in the late 1970s, probably also on a railtour following withdrawal from scheduled service. I've loved them ever since and until now I've only bashed on heritage lines.

Roll on April 27th.

It's looking like Deltic D9009 will be standing in for the Western.

D9009 ALYCIDON is now confirmed as operating this tour south of Bristol, with a 66 doing the bits between all the pick-ups.
