D stock - like or dislike?

Will 21327/8 be renumbered onto the end of S8 sequence given the Underground's historical preference to pointlessly renumber things in order to keep the fleet lists looking neat and tidy?

I've always liked the D stock, they've always been far nicer than the horrible C stock! And while the original interior with the iconic 70s moquette (as used on the T, M and L buses and 1983 stock) was attractive in a 70s way, the refurb did a really good job, the curvy handrails give a bit of style to the interior when compared with that ugly central block down the middle of the refurbished C stock.

Having said that, the S7 is a major step forward. What's notable and surprising is how much wider they seem, the space between the longitudinal seats seems much greater, which really makes a difference to standing capacity. The D stock had longer carriages than the A, C and S stock, were they narrower as a result?

Train #192 is to be an S7.
The MET are keeping S7+1 21327/28 for the Metropolitan Line Extension balance and new 21567/68 will replace that on the Circle/H&C/District.

I do hope these won't have all longitudinal seating like the S7's at the moment.

In the evening peak, stood at Mile End eastbound while Central line train after Central line train disgorges passengers over to the District platform, I'm always happier when an S7 turns up. As someone else mentioned, they seem hugely more spacious inside (you can usually get 2 lines of standing passengers inside) and the wide doors are a big improvement.

That being said, the D stock aren't bad. It does feel rather like they're getting the bare minimum of TLC these days, having not long left in their current role. I'm also intrigued to see how the Vivarail trial goes - the suspension/etc gives a comfortable ride, so I'm looking forward to seeing what they can make of the interior.

Aesthetically the D-stock is my least favourite current underground train.

I really like the Piccadilly 1973-stock, despite their age.

I do like the D78 stock but can see how passengers would prefer the S-stock. It is pretty cool to look down one end to the other, although not a luxury one would expect to have during the peak! Are the single leaf doors the same diameter as the 1983 stock had on the Jubilee? They soon got shut of that stock due to that particular flaw, the D78 stock has lasted a lot longer in spite of it.

If yes, then can we add 387/2's, IEP's and the M500 trams to that club? (If you, like me, count trams as trains)

Hi all,

What are peoples opinion of the soon to go 'D stock' from the district line and do you prefer the new S stock to the D stock? Personally, I much prefer the new stock (S stock) to the old D stock.

I've created a poll (I hope it's come out right!) to ask if you like or dislike the stock. I haven't included 'OK' because that kind of covers both except the people who really love or really hate it.

The S Stock is amazing. It is so spacious and sleek. The open gangways increase capacity. There's also automated announcements as well as air conditioning.

Yep. I like loads of trains! Would you like me to name the classes ?

I don't hate the D78s at all I just don't really like them compared to most other tube stock. I like the look of the D trains though.

Crates. Absolute crates. Doubt I'll miss them, although the loss variety that's come about with the 4LM will be a shame.

The S stock are excellent and a large improvement over the D stock, but I wouldn't say that I 'dislike' the D stock. They did the job. But I won't miss them.

I travel on the District Line everyday and now wait for an S7 if a D Stock turns up. They're awful, fell much more cramped than S7's and darker. When I used to get the first train that turns up, there was many a time westbound I would alight at Tower Hill to jump on a S& on a Tower Hull run in the terminating platforms there.

But I'm quite old fashioned, I like things that can be fixed with a hammer.

And as a PS; there's nothing stopping D78 Stock being fitted with the 4LM ATP...

A reform of this train will be required as it still contains two M2D de-icing cars.

Presumably they will do a vehicle swap with one other unit ( at a guess 21388, being the first one without a de-icing car ) and then renumber the two swapped carriages to match the rest of the units they are placed in?

I didn't mind the C stock - very well designed for their job, with the sets of 4 doors that haven't been repeated elsewhere. What most people didn't like about them (but I thought gave them some character) was that in practice they weren't very good performance-wise. Quite slow, noisy, etc. Also one thing I remember about them is the doors:

Personally I like the D Stock. It's a good tube stock train. Can it last a few more years though?
